British subwoofer specialist REL Acoustics is rethinking how low frequencies should live inside a modern home. With the introduction of the new Planar Series, the company moves away from the traditional bulky subwoofer cabinet and instead delivers a far slimmer, more discreet solution designed to blend naturally into contemporary interiors without sacrificing the deep, physical bass REL is known for.

The new lineup consists of two models — the Planar PL-1 and the larger flagship Planar PL-2 — both engineered around an ultra-slim enclosure measuring only 14.5 centimeters deep. Rather than dominating a room like a conventional floor-standing subwoofer, the Planar series is designed to mount directly on a wall or be installed flush into the environment, making it particularly appealing for minimalist living rooms, luxury media spaces, and modern home cinemas.

A Different Approach to Bass

For decades, subwoofers have largely followed the same formula: large black cubes placed somewhere on the floor, often hidden in a corner. REL believes there is a better way. The new Planar series shifts the focus toward architectural integration, allowing bass performance to become part of the room itself instead of an obvious standalone component.

The idea is not simply about aesthetics. By positioning the enclosure close to the wall, REL also takes advantage of natural boundary reinforcement to increase bass efficiency and depth despite the remarkably thin cabinet design.

Slim Design, Serious Low-End Performance

The flagship Planar PL-2 combines an 8-inch active driver with a 10-inch passive radiator mounted at the rear, giving the subwoofer the ability to dig surprisingly deep while maintaining a compact profile. According to REL, the PL-2 reaches down to an impressive 24 Hz (-6 dB), delivering the kind of low-end authority typically associated with far larger enclosures.

The smaller Planar PL-1 takes a different approach, using dual 6.5-inch active drivers alongside the same 10-inch passive radiator system. While more compact, it still promises substantial low-frequency output with extension down to 31 Hz, making it ideal for elegant two-channel systems, smaller media rooms, or installations where visual discretion is a priority.

Designed for Modern Living Spaces

Both models weigh under 23 kilograms and include a dedicated wall-mounting system engineered to maintain the precise distance needed for the passive radiator to operate correctly. REL has also developed an optional wheeled floor stand, allowing users to experiment with placement before committing to a final installation.

Wireless functionality is built directly into both models, and REL confirms compatibility with its AirShip Direct wireless transmission system. The receiver module itself is integrated into the side panel and can reportedly be upgraded in the future as wireless technology evolves — a forward-thinking touch that hints at long-term platform support rather than disposable hardware.
