The McIntosh MC312 is a stereo power amplifier that features a classic circuit design and traditional construction typical of the brand. In comparison to the MC302, enhancements have been made to the filters, resulting in an increased dynamic range from 1.8 dB to 2.3 dB. This improvement allows the amplifier to deliver more robust bass performance and handle dynamic changes more effectively. Additionally, the design has been updated; the front panel now incorporates direct LED backlighting. The output transformers are elegantly enclosed with a single panel that includes glass inserts, providing a view of the amplifier’s internal wiring.
The output stages of the McIntosh MC312 amplifier are made according to a push-pull scheme on complementary pairs of high-current transistors and are supplemented with autotransformers. The latter provide equal power when connecting 8.4 or 2-ohm acoustic systems – separate screw terminals are provided for their connection. The output stage transistors are made according to the company’s specifications in such a way as to ensure their minimal heating even during prolonged operation at high power. In addition, the device’s temperature regime is monitored by a special Thermal Track scheme, which automatically makes the necessary adjustments to the parameters when it deteriorates.
The output autotransformers, as well as the most powerful transformer of the power supply, are covered with a metal shielding casing. This allows for a significant reduction in crosstalk and a significant reduction in the level of background noise.
The front panel of the McIntosh MC312 amplifier features large blue backlit output power indicators (which can be turned off if desired) to avoid overloading the connected speaker systems. The unit can be turned on manually using the rotary switch on the front panel, or set to auto-on mode by command from other McIntosh components.
The McIntosh MC312 amplifier is equipped with balanced and unbalanced inputs, a specific connection type is selected using the toggle switch on the rear panel. The amplifier chassis reliably protects the electronic circuits from external mechanical and electrical influences, and the front panel of the unit is made of thick tempered glass.
The overall build quality of the amplifier is very high, which, incidentally, distinguishes all audio components of this American company. McIntosh MC312 can be successfully used both in high-end stereo systems and in a home theater – the device is able to confidently cope with the most complex acoustic systems, and qualitatively sound large rooms.
