Audiovector QR Sub: Classic subwoofer that still packs a solid punch

Audiovector QR Sub
Audiovector QR Sub

The Audiovector QR Sub subwoofer serves as the second option within the Audiovector lineup. The first subwoofer, the SR Sub, belongs to the SR series and comes in various versions, including Super, Signature, Avantgarde, and Avantgarde Arrete. In contrast, the Audiovector QR Sub is designed as a more straightforward model, representing the entry-level option of the series. It features a reliable design that combines a forward-facing active driver with a downward-facing passive driver. The enclosure houses a robust amplifier that includes both low-level and high-level inputs, making it suitable for both home theater and music systems. This subwoofer integrates effortlessly with setups that utilize QR series speakers. It is available in three standard finishes: black, white, and wood.

The QR family is part of Audiovector’s entry-level product range. This series features AMT tweeters and Pure Piston midbass drivers. While the subwoofer does not include a tweeter, it utilizes a 250 mm Pure Piston driver. The Pure Piston technology employs a “sandwich” structure, with a layer of foamed adhesive sandwiched between two aluminum layers. This design aims to minimize resonances in the aluminum membrane by using the foam as a damping layer.

As a result, the driver benefits from two key features: it maintains the rapid response and lightweight characteristics of aluminum while also mitigating internal resonances of the diaphragm within the audible spectrum. Such resonances can be particularly pronounced in subwoofers with long-stroke, downward-firing drivers, negatively impacting the overall sound quality. However, with Pure Piston technology, the subwoofer is inherently designed to deliver optimal sound performance. The 350 W amplifier ensures a well-controlled output that is impressively deep yet retains a “light” quality. Additionally, the amplifier includes an automatic power-on feature, two volume settings, and adjustable frequency and phase controls.

Establishing an audio signal that perfectly matches the output from the main speakers requires a high-level connection. An optional cable is available for this purpose, featuring a Neutrik Speakon connector on one end and three individual wires for connecting to the amplifier’s speaker terminals on the other. To integrate the subwoofer into the cinema system, utilize the subwoofer Phono connector. It is essential to connect to both the left and right inputs, even if the amplifier is equipped with a single subwoofer output. In such cases, Audiovector suggests employing a Y-type splitter. For stereo systems, a high-level connection is advisable, even if the amplifier includes a dedicated subwoofer output.

The setup procedure is straightforward regardless of the connection type. For the recommended high-level connection, gradually increase the system volume while checking the phase alignment from your listening position. Afterward, lower the volume until the subwoofer is still audible. Although Audiovector does not specifically endorse this method, it may be beneficial to revisit the setup after a couple of weeks: consider slightly increasing the frequency and reducing the volume.

Subwoofers can be categorized into two primary types: those that produce overwhelming bass without a true understanding of sound quality, and more refined models that deliver quick, accurate bass. The Audiovector QR Sub falls into the latter category. When integrated into a surround sound system with the proper connections, this subwoofer offers a deeper and richer sound profile, yet it excels in more sophisticated setups where it complements the main speakers.

The Audiovector QR Sub is remarkably quick, enhancing the sound of drums by making them feel more expansive and vibrant, whether they are acoustic or electronic. If a pronounced “boom” is desired, the QR Sub can certainly deliver. Overall, this subwoofer integrates seamlessly with the Audiovector QR acoustics series, matching their speed of response while adding depth. Larger floor-standing speakers typically require less additional bass.

Audiovector QR Sub excels in its remarkable speed. When it comes to delivering robust deep bass, it performs adequately, which will satisfy enthusiasts of low frequencies in both films and music. However, there are larger and more powerful options available in the market that may offer a more energetic experience. Paradoxically, if your primary requirement is solely bass from a subwoofer, the Audiovector QR Sub may not fully meet your expectations. However, if you seek a refined solution to enhance your system’s sound with effective support in the lower frequency range, I strongly suggest considering the Audiovector QR Sub.
