Lumin S2 Network Streamer Adopts Flagship X1 DAC Architecture

Lumin has introduced the S2, a network streamer and DAC that draws on the flagship X1 platform while adding coaxial and optical digital inputs for external sources.

Lumin has expanded its network-player range with the S2, a single-chassis streamer and digital-to-analog converter based on technology developed for the flagship X1. The new model also introduces digital inputs, allowing its internal DAC to serve sources beyond network audio.

Dual-mono conversion derived from the X1

At the center of the Lumin S2 is a dual-mono conversion stage built around two ESS Sabre ES9038PRO DAC chips. The player also uses the fully balanced analog output architecture found in Lumin’s upper-tier models, including a pair of Lundahl LL7401 output transformers.

Digital timing is handled by a Femto Clock system with FPGA-based clock distribution. Lumin has also adapted the dual-toroidal-transformer power-supply design associated with its X Series for the S2’s single enclosure. The revised and shielded arrangement maintains separate power feeds for the digital and analog circuitry.

The S2 runs on Lumin’s latest processor and software platform rather than the original X1 hardware. According to the product information, the updated platform provides greater flexibility for resampling and leaves scope for future additions through firmware updates.

Digital inputs broaden the S2’s role

The addition of external digital inputs is a significant change for a Lumin network player. The S2 includes one coaxial RCA S/PDIF input and one optical Toslink S/PDIF input, enabling its dual-DAC architecture to be used with other digital components.

Both connections accept PCM signals at resolutions up to 24-bit/192 kHz, as well as DSD64 carried via DoP. Compatible sources could include a CD or SACD transport with an appropriate digital output, a computer or a games console.

This expanded input selection positions the S2 as more than a dedicated network endpoint. It can also function as the central digital conversion stage in a system containing both streamed music and conventional digital sources.

Streaming support reaches DSD512 and 384 kHz PCM

For network playback, the Lumin S2 supports audio files up to DSD512 and PCM at up to 32-bit/384 kHz. Its integrated service compatibility includes Roon Ready operation, Tidal Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect and Amazon Music.

AirPlay, KKBOX and QQMusic compatibility is also included, alongside full MQA decoding. These options allow the S2 to work with several playback ecosystems and music-service apps rather than requiring a single streaming platform.

Lumin’s Leedh Processing digital volume control is provided as standard. This allows the S2 to be connected directly to a power amplifier when a separate analog preamplifier is not required, while users can also integrate it into a conventional system through its analog output stage.

Minimal controls and two finishes

The S2 follows Lumin’s established minimalist approach and does not include controls on its front panel. An infrared remote control is available as an optional accessory, while routine playback and configuration are handled through the player’s software environment and supported control platforms.

The single-piece chassis is offered in silver and black finishes. Pricing has not been disclosed, and availability details for the Benelux market have yet to be announced.

By combining X1-derived conversion and analog circuitry with new digital inputs, the Lumin S2 is designed to operate as both a high-resolution network player and a DAC for additional digital sources. Its extensive streaming support and volume-control capability also give it flexibility for use with either a complete hi-fi system or a power amplifier directly.
