Sony BRAVIA Theatre Trio Builds a Wider 3.0.2-Channel TV Soundstage

Sony has introduced the BRAVIA Theatre Trio, a three-piece home cinema system designed to provide a wider front soundstage and clearer dialogue without requiring a conventional AV receiver. The 3.0.2-channel package combines nine speaker units, 405 watts of total output and support for immersive movie sound formats.

Three speakers with dedicated roles

Rather than placing every driver inside a single soundbar enclosure, the BRAVIA Theatre Trio divides the front soundstage between a center speaker and two separate front speakers. The center connects to a television through HDMI eARC or ARC, while the left and right speakers communicate wirelessly with the system.

Its nine-driver, 3.0.2-channel configuration includes upward-firing speakers for height information. The center is a two-way design with two bass drivers and a tweeter, and the two front speakers also use two-way configurations. Sony’s S-Master digital amplification supplies nine channels with a combined output of 405 watts.

This physical separation is intended to anchor speech beneath the screen while allowing music and effects to extend farther across the front of the room. Voice and Night modes are provided for situations where dialogue needs greater emphasis or overall playback levels must remain restrained. Voice Zoom 3 adds further adjustment when the system is paired with a compatible BRAVIA television.

Spatial processing and room calibration

Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping technology can generate as many as 24 virtual speaker positions around the listening area. The processing works with the three physical enclosures to broaden the perceived sound field beyond their installed locations.

Acoustic calibration measures frequency, phase and delay characteristics before optimizing playback for the room and speaker positions. Setup is handled through the BRAVIA Connect app, with QR-based guidance and an included USB Type-C calibration microphone. The speakers can be placed on furniture or wall-mounted, and the package includes wall brackets and a mounting template.

Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, IMAX Enhanced and high-resolution audio are supported through HDMI eARC. Sony also includes upmixing for stereo material, while Multi Stereo can distribute the same signal across the front, center and any compatible rear speakers added to the installation.

HDMI features and streaming options

Connectivity includes one HDMI input and one HDMI output with eARC and ARC. HDMI 2.1 functions include VRR, ALLM and SBTM, alongside HDMI CEC and BRAVIA Sync for coordinated control with compatible televisions. Pass-through support for Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode is available when the system is used with a compatible BRAVIA TV and PlayStation 5.

The Theatre Trio also operates as a standalone music system when the television is switched off. Wi-Fi supports Spotify Connect and AirPlay, while Bluetooth 6.0 compatibility covers SBC, AAC and LDAC codecs. DSEE Ultimate uses Edge-AI processing to upscale compressed digital music in real time.

Daily operation can be managed through the BRAVIA Connect app or a compatible BRAVIA remote. The system’s single HDMI input may require users with several source components to route additional devices through their television.

Expandable for rear channels and deeper bass

The standard package does not include a subwoofer or rear speakers, but it can be expanded with BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 or Rear 8 speakers. It also supports as many as two compatible BRAVIA Theatre subwoofers for installations requiring stronger low-frequency output.

The center speaker measures 23.2 by 2.5 by 6.5 inches and weighs approximately 7.1 pounds. Each front speaker measures 6.3 by 13.3 by 6.5 inches and weighs 7.9 pounds. All three enclosures are finished in black.

Sony has also incorporated recycled materials into the construction and packaging. Approximately 87 percent of the speaker textile is recycled, while around 77 percent of the packaging uses recycled paper and paper-based materials. Supplied accessories include a remote control, HDMI cable, calibration microphone, stand components and wall-mounting hardware.

The BRAVIA Theatre Trio occupies the space between a compact soundbar and a receiver-based speaker system. Its separate center and front speakers, immersive-format support, automated calibration and optional wireless expansion provide a modular route to larger-scale television sound.
