Onkyo HT-S7805: Home theater system designed for Dolby Atmos

Onkyo HT-S7805
Onkyo HT-S7805

Onkyo has released a 5.1.2-channel HT S7805 home theater system designed specifically for Dolby Atmos audio. The set consists of a 7.2-channel network AV receiver HT-R695, five speakers and a subwoofer. The 5.1.2 configuration is achieved through the presence of full-range height drivers that are built into the front speakers and directed towards the ceiling. These are the so-called Dolby Atmos Enabled speakers – the sound of the upward-firing speakers is reflected from the ceiling and passes over the viewer’s head. Read more about the technology here. All satellites have a maximum power of 130 W, impedance – 6 Ohms. The subwoofer is equipped with a 20 cm woofer, power – 80 W at a resistance of 4 ohms.

The HT-R695 receiver is almost identical to the TX-NR646. The receiver’s preamplifier supports WRAT (Wide Range Amplifier Technology). The model is equipped with a Burr-Brown DAC (192 kHz/24 bit for 8 channels) and a 32-bit DSP processor. The HT-R693 output power is 160 W/ch @ 6 ohms, (1 kHz, 1%, 1 ch active, IEC) or 175 W/ch @ 6 ohms (1 kHz, 1 ch active, JEITA).There is support for 4K/60 Hz video with HDCP 2.2 protection protocol. Upselling works using Qdeo technology from Marvell. The new product has 7 HDMI inputs (1 on the front panel) with support for 4K/60 Hz, and is provided with access to a second broadcast zone. As expected, the receiver is equipped with a variety of inputs/outputs: component video input and output, three composite video inputs and one output, three digital audio inputs, six analog inputs, a phono input, two parallel subwoofer outputs (Pre-Outs). The S/PDIF outputs feature a PLL for jitter suppression. It is possible to connect the front channels using a biamping circuit.

Built-in Ethernet, Wi-Fi, DLNA and Bluetooth + EDR interfaces allow you to transfer both compressed and HD content over a local network, from a computer or portable media. Supported services include TuneIn Radio, Pandora, Spotify, AUPEO!, and Deezer. To improve the quality of compressed audio, the receiver is equipped with Advanced Music Optimizer technology. You can control the device with a standard remote control and via RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI). The package includes an AccuEQ Room Calibration acoustics adjustment system with a microphone included.

What is Dolby Atmos, or multichannel sound without channels?
This year, Dolby responsibly announced that Atmos would be available for home theaters. The new format takes into account all the “troubles” of ordinary rooms, a small number of speakers and other things. However, most manufacturers have so far announced support for the new format only for older AV receivers with 9.2 or 11.2 configurations. In fact, Dolby Atmos works quite well with 8-channel systems (7.1). So, when buying a new receiver with Dolby Atmos, you can get by with the current system, and when you want to get even more “three-dimensionality”, you can purchase and install the missing speakers (subwoofer or ceiling systems).
TX NR646 BL 14
Thus, to build a new system for Dolby Atmos, you can use the following options (both purchased from scratch and upgraded/added):
5.1 + 2 speakers on the ceiling;5.1 + 2 top front speakers;5.1 + 4 speakers on the ceiling;5.1 + 2 upper front speakers + 2 ceiling speakers;7.1 + 2 speakers on the ceiling;7.1 + 2 top front speakers;7.1 + 4 speakers on the ceiling;7.1 + 2 upper front speakers + 2 ceiling speakers;9.1 + 2 speakers on the ceiling;9.1 + 2 top front speakers;9.1 + 4 speakers on the ceiling;9.1 + 2 upper front speakers + 2 ceiling speakers.If you use the maximum audio set in 11.1 or 11.2 configuration, then the home theater can be represented by the following system: 2 front speakers, 2 front height speakers (with a slight downward tilt), 1 center speaker, 1 or 2 subwoofers, 2 rear speakers, 2 rear center speakers, 2 ceiling speakers.
TX NR646 BL 11
It is worth noting that with ceiling speakers, not everything is usually smooth – they require special ceilings, room preparation, and much more. But thanks to the automatic setup of the system controlled by Dolby Atmos, there are only two conditions left: it would be nice if the ceiling has a sound-reflecting finish made of plaster, plasterboard, concrete or wood and is located at a height of no more than 4.3 meters. However, the ideal room height for using the system at home is 2.4-2.7 meters, as when the walls are higher, the soundstage may begin to wash out. And this cannot be corrected by purchasing a more expensive receiver – alas, these are the laws of physics and the limits of the Dolby Atmos system settings. It is important that lamps, air conditioners, heating systems and other irremovable ceiling barriers to sound do not matter at the optimal ceiling height (again, according to experts).
TX NR646 BL 12
In general, Dolby Atmos, as stated above, no matter how many channels there are at the output, the algorithm will distribute the tracks as needed. Therefore, the company does not hide the fact that implementation will soon appear for both stereo systems and, what is especially interesting, for headphones. Moreover, it is quite possible that the algorithm will work even on mobile devices (we believe, if there is enough processor power.
