Melco has introduced a new network switch known as the S1. This model offers a diverse array of connectivity and installation choices, and is promoted as an adaptive network switch tailored to meet the needs of discerning audiophiles seeking an optimal digital audio networking solution.
Melco S1: all zeros and ones neatly in step
Melco Audio, a leading Japanese authority in digital music, introduces its premier S1 Audio Network Switch, featuring innovative electronics that, as claimed by the designers, establish new benchmarks for data switches in audio systems. The S1 is equipped with a total of four SFP+ ports and seven RJ45 ports, supporting Optical SFP+, Copper SFP+ Direct Attach (such as the Melco C1), along with all standard RJ45 connections.
The S1 differs from a standard switch in that each data port can be adjusted to the optimal link speed for the specific environment and hardware, all from the front panel in real time. The front panel buttons correspond to the layout of the back panel, with each port featuring a dedicated button to select the Link Speed, which is visually confirmed by the button’s illumination color.
Additionally, Melco notes that any inactive port can be disabled, allowing for enhanced processing power for the remaining active ports, thereby improving sound quality. The Link/Act LEDs located on the rear panel can also be turned off to further enhance sound quality. Furthermore, there is a practical USB port on the rear panel that supplies power exclusively for accessory devices, such as a Wi-Fi adapter or an ADOT audiophile fiber optic isolation kit.
Consideration has been given to future upgradeability through a port designed for an external 10MHz clock speed. The use of professional Neutrik RJ45 connectors guarantees dependable connectivity. The internal components are reportedly designed with specialized audio-optimized technology, featuring a high-quality internal NDK clock and a low-noise linear power supply supported by a capacitor bank, similar to that found in the Melco N1 Music Library. Additionally, the exceptionally sturdy chassis mirrors that of the N1, utilizing a combination of thick steel and aluminum panels to provide an ideal foundation for the electronics.
The Melco S1 Audio Network Switch is available in black or silver with a suggested retail price of $14,000.
