Triangle Borea BR05 Takes the Standmount Range Up a Size

The $999 Borea BR05 becomes Triangle’s highest-priced Borea standmount, combining a large 21cm mid/bass driver with room-conscious placement features.

Triangle has created a new upper tier within its Borea standmount lineup. The Borea BR05 is a large-format passive speaker priced at $999, placing it above the range’s other standmount models while remaining below the $1,149 BR10 floorstander. Its defining feature is a substantial 21cm cellulose-pulp mid/bass driver, but the positioning is about more than cone diameter. Forward-facing bass ports, an eight-degree backward tilt and optional dedicated stands suggest a speaker intended to provide greater scale without requiring buyers to move to a conventional tower. Five finishes, including Green and Frosted White, give that functional brief a deliberately visible design identity.

A standmount positioned just below the BR10 floorstander

Rather than introduce another compact bookshelf model, Triangle has extended the Borea Series with a speaker that occupies the boundary between standmount and floorstanding formats. The BR05 is the most expensive standmount in the range, yet its list price sits only $150 below the Borea BR10. That narrow separation makes its role relatively clear: it is an alternative format rather than simply a lower-cost route into the upper part of the series.

The choice will therefore depend heavily on room layout and the visual proportions a buyer prefers. A large standmount can offer more flexibility than a tall cabinet because it may be used with its supplied base or raised on optional stands. However, adding the dedicated S03 stands costs $299 per pair, taking the complete speaker-and-stand arrangement beyond the BR10’s listed price. Buyers considering both formats will need to weigh footprint, placement and appearance rather than looking only at the initial speaker price.

The 21cm cellulose driver sets the acoustic agenda

A 21cm mid/bass unit is the central element of the BR05. Its cone is made from natural cellulose pulp, a material Triangle associates with texture and presence in voices and instruments. The cone profile and dust cap have also been tuned to reconcile the larger driver’s sense of scale with the finesse expected from a standmount design. Those are manufacturer claims rather than independent performance findings, but they explain why the BR05 occupies a distinct place in the range.

Supporting the cone is a motor system built around a 120mm ferrite magnet and a 40mm voice coil. Triangle uses a rigid, open basket to encourage airflow and heat dissipation, with the stated aim of maintaining composure during dynamic passages. The relationship between those parts is important: the large cone establishes the BR05’s scale-oriented brief, while the motor, coil and ventilation measures are intended to keep that driver controlled when playback becomes more demanding.

High frequencies are handled by the Borea Series’ familiar 25mm silk-dome tweeter, fitted with a phase plug. Triangle attributes more precise soundstage presentation to this arrangement. Retaining the series tweeter also connects the BR05 to the rest of the Borea family, while the oversized mid/bass unit gives this model its particular identity.

Cabinet energy is addressed at the driver mount

The enclosure is made from high-density MDF and reinforced internally with bracing. Triangle has gone further than relying on cabinet mass and braces alone, adding its proprietary driver vibration absorption system. A high-density foam gasket links the rear of the mid/bass motor to an internal brace, creating a route for mechanical energy to be dissipated before it reaches the cabinet.

That arrangement is intended to manage the physical consequences of installing a large driver in a standmount enclosure. Unwanted energy transferred into cabinet panels can interfere with their intended structural role, so Triangle’s approach combines conventional reinforcement with localized damping at the motor assembly. No measurements have been supplied to quantify the result, but the construction shows that vibration management was treated as part of the driver system rather than as a separate cabinet detail.

Bi-wirable terminals provide another system-level option. Owners can use a conventional single-wire connection or separate cable runs for the speaker’s frequency sections when paired with suitable amplification and wiring. The feature does not require a more complex installation, but it leaves that route open for systems already configured around bi-wiring.

Forward ports reduce dependence on rear-wall clearance

Two bass-reflex ports are placed on the front baffle. Triangle says this makes the BR05 less sensitive to the distance between the cabinet and the wall behind it, potentially easing placement in real rooms. That does not establish that the speaker can be positioned anywhere without experimentation, but it removes rear-firing ports from the list of variables facing owners with limited space behind their speakers.

The choice is especially coherent for a large standmount. A buyer may want more physical scale than a smaller model can provide while still needing to work around furniture, shelving or a restricted listening area. Forward venting cannot eliminate room interaction, yet it is intended to make the BR05 less dependent on generous rear clearance than a comparable rear-ported arrangement.

Placement flexibility is also supported by the supplied base, which angles the cabinet backward by eight degrees. Triangle says the rake is intended to improve soundstage coherence while keeping the installation visually discreet. Because the base is included, owners can use that geometry without immediately buying dedicated stands.

The same eight-degree rake carries onto the S03 stands

For installations that require the speakers to be raised toward listening height, Triangle offers the S03 stands at $299 per pair. The eight-degree backward angle is preserved when the BR05 is mounted on them, maintaining the orientation established by the supplied base rather than changing the intended cabinet geometry as the speaker is elevated.

This creates two documented setup paths. The included base may suit lower furniture or situations in which the speaker needs to retain a modest visual profile. The S03 option is aimed at a more conventional freestanding stereo arrangement, where height and separation can be adjusted independently of existing furniture. Triangle has not provided room-specific placement rules in the announcement, so final positioning will still require attention to the listening distance and surrounding boundaries.

Finish selection is broader than a basic light-or-dark choice. Light Oak, Black Ash and Chestnut provide conventional wood-oriented options, while Green and Frosted White move the BR05 toward a more decorative role. That matters for a cabinet and driver combination designed to have more physical presence than a compact standmount: the speaker is unlikely to disappear visually, so finish becomes part of the system decision.

The Borea BR05 appears directed at listeners who want the format flexibility of a standmount but do not want Triangle’s smaller models to define the scale of the system. Its 21cm driver, braced MDF cabinet and vibration-control arrangement support that positioning, while the front ports and supplied angled base acknowledge that a larger enclosure still has to function in an ordinary room. The main decision may be whether to use the included base or commit to the $299 S03 stands, particularly because the latter changes the total cost relationship with the BR10 floorstander. Independent assessment will also need to establish how the BR05 behaves across different room sizes and amplifier pairings. Triangle has not provided sensitivity, impedance, frequency response, cabinet dimensions or recommended amplifier power in the supplied announcement, leaving several important system-matching questions open. The speakers are available to order now in all five finishes.
