Japanese headphone manufacturer Stax has announced the return of one of its most celebrated models, the SR-009. The designers immediately seized the opportunity to modernize the headphones, and the result is the SR-009D electrostatic headphones.
Stax SR-009D

Stax states that this updated version is a direct response to persistent demand from enthusiasts hoping for the return of the original SR-009. Rather than reinventing the wheel, Stax has focused on preservation and refinement. The SR-009D retains the core technology that made the original a benchmark, but introduces a range of practical innovations that align it with the current Stax ecosystem. The new edition follows Stax’s updated SR-007S, which launched earlier this year, as the company continues to refine key models in its electrostatic headphone portfolio.
Key to the design remains the Multi-Layer-Electrode (MLER) architecture, formed by bonding three stainless steel plates at the atomic level. It’s a technique Stax has long championed, and here the goal is to deliver the same transparent clarity and ultra-low resonance that defined the original. The brand claims a wide and immersive soundstage, with the kind of near-weightless detail that electrostatic fans expect.

One of the biggest changes is much simpler: the introduction of a detachable and fully replaceable cable. This alone will be welcomed by loyal Stax users, many of whom have been asking for improved maintainability and future upgradeability for years. Additionally, a newly developed injection-molded housing has been introduced to reduce overall weight, genuine sheepskin ear cushions have been adopted, and a revised headband mechanism has been designed with ten adjustment steps for a more precise fit.

Douglas Ip, Stax’s Head of Sales and Marketing, said the reissue directly aligns with the model’s long-standing reputation: “The SR-009 has always held a special place in the hearts of our customers and in Stax’s history. With the SR-009D, we’re thrilled to bring back that legendary sound, updated with the features our customers have long requested. It’s the perfect gateway to the world of high-end electrostatic audio, offering an unparalleled listening experience at a much more accessible price.”
Stax specifies a frequency response of 5 Hz to 42 kHz. The SR-009D has open-back earcups. They weigh 452 grams.
The SR-009D comes with a lightweight aluminum carrying case that protects against bumps and weather. It’s a practical addition for owners who consider their headphones a long-term investment.
For the record, the SR-009D, like all other electrostatic headphones, requires a suitable headphone amplifier. Stax can, of course, supply one.
