Astell & Kern Luna: $3,000 Titanium Earbuds with Micro-Planar Driver for Audiophile-Grade Sound

Astell & Kern says the Luna was designed to showcase the brand’s philosophy of combining engineering precision and advanced design to deliver exceptional sound. The Japanese-made Luna is inspired by the curves of the moon, according to Astell & Kern.

The new in-ear headphones feature a single micro-planar magnetic driver, co-developed with Japanese earphone specialist Madoo. The new driver, called Katabiki, has a diameter of 13 millimeters and uses a single powerful magnet and a double ring-shaped yoke for more control. The use of an ultra-thin and lightweight foil with a printed aluminum pattern drastically reduces the weight of the diaphragm, according to Astell & Kern. The diaphragm housing is also made of CNC-milled aluminum.

The Luna earbuds themselves are housed in a sleek titanium housing that’s designed to be both durable and comfortable, even during long listening sessions. According to the designers, it’s not just about visual elegance and comfort; the curves have also been carefully engineered to optimize the acoustic flow of the new driver. A&K promises nothing less than exceptional response speed, exceptional resolution, and the most delicate details of music. The quoted frequency response ranges from 20Hz to 30kHz. At 1kHz, the Luna has an impedance of five ohms.

The Luna comes with a cable made from a mix of high purity silver and copper resulting in a detailed and accurate sound. The buyer also gets seven pairs of fits made from different materials. The beautiful storage case looks like a jewelry box from an exclusive jewelry store.

The Luna retails for just under $3,000
