Musical Fidelity B1xi: Powerful Class AB integrated amplifier

Musical Fidelity B1xi
Musical Fidelity B1xi

Musical Fidelity has launched the B1xi, a Class AB integrated amplifier equipped with analog and digital inputs. According to the designers, the new B1xi follows in the footsteps of the B1 from the 1990s, and the manufacturer promises a cost-effective hi-fi experience.

According to Musical Fidelity, the B-series is designed to offer customers the true Musical Fidelity experience at an attractive price. Like the B1 amplifier from the 1990s, the B1xi is presented as an open-sounding, fully discrete transistor-controlled Class AB amplifier.

According to the press release, this new integrated amplifier features a premium amplifier design, with Class AB transistor amplifiers delivering a highly immersive, tube-like sound with a rated output power of 60 watts into eight ohms (100 watts into four ohms, 140 watts into two ohms). This should allow it to drive a wide range of speakers. Furthermore, it’s said to have ample peak headroom, resulting in a wide dynamic range.

The B1xi’s design is essentially an electrically isolated preamplifier and power amplifier. The B1xi’s preamplifier section is equipped with its own linear power supply, ensuring extremely low noise and excellent channel separation. Volume control is controlled by a motor-driven analog potentiometer for clean signal adjustment. Furthermore, when the lid is opened, it becomes apparent that the potentially interference-inducing digital circuit boards are physically separated into their own circuit boards, each with its own linear power supply.

According to Musical Fidelity, the B1xi has a THD+N value of less than 0.02 percent over the 20 Hz to 20 kHz range and an S/N ratio of over 100 dB (A-weighted). The specified frequency response is 10 Hz to 30 kHz (+0.-3 dB).

The Musical Fidelity B1xi measures 90 x 430 x 324 millimeters (H x W x D) and features a range of input options, including a low-noise, high-gain MM phono preamplifier. This is complemented by three line-level RCA inputs, an optical input (supporting up to 24-bit/192 kHz), a coaxial input (supporting up to 24-bit/192 kHz), and an HDMI ARC port (supporting up to 24-bit/192 kHz). There is also a set of variable RCA outputs for use with subwoofers or a separate power amplifier. Banana plug binding posts are fitted for speaker connection. In keeping with the times, the B1xi can also receive music signals via Bluetooth.

In addition, the B1xi is equipped with a 5V USB-C output for connecting an external streamer and a 3.5 millimeter jack headphone connection.

Streaming features have been deliberately omitted. All-in-one streaming amplifiers are more expensive and less future-proof. The B1xi has no obsolescence-prone features and, according to the manufacturer, has a long lifespan ahead of it.

Music Fidelity B1xi: price and delivery information

The Musical Fidelity B1xi will be available in stores soon with a suggested retail price of just under $800.
