Wharfedale Diamond A1: Calm and well-balanced speakers

Wharfedale Diamond A1
Wharfedale Diamond A1

The prevalence of wireless connections has made it challenging to astonish anyone, as nearly all home and automotive audio systems can now receive signals via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. However, Wharfedale experts have advanced this concept further by minimizing the use of wires significantly. They have launched the Diamond Active series of acoustic systems, which maintain a traditional shelf design while modernizing their connectivity options.

Each Wharfedale Diamond Active A1 speaker is equipped with a built-in 50 W amplifier, receiving signals wirelessly. Notably, the Bluetooth aptX module is not integrated into the speakers; instead, it is housed in a separate compact Wharfedale H1 controller unit. This unit connects to the audio source and transmits the signal to the speakers using a 5.8 GHz radio frequency. This innovative setup eliminates the need for power and signal cables between the speakers, allowing them to be positioned up to 20 meters away from the controller. The unit also features volume control and source selection buttons, serving as a partial substitute for a traditional remote control. Additionally, it supports wired connections, including optical and coaxial S/PDIF, as well as two RCA inputs.

Initially, the Wharfedale Diamond Active A1 appears to be a traditional stereo system featuring a receiver and a pair of bookshelf speakers. However, a closer examination reveals significant deviations from the conventional setup. Rather than housing the amplifier within the central unit, the design opts for active acoustics. This approach facilitates optimal integration of the amplifier with the speakers, effectively isolating the right and left channels and eliminating the need for lengthy high-level connections. Additionally, the low-level analog path is minimized, enhancing resistance to interference. The designers have successfully implemented the widely embraced “dual mono” concept while completely removing the necessity for cable switching. The digital signal can be transmitted wirelessly with minimal loss, which is a notable advantage of the Wharfedale Diamond Active A1.

All three components of the system require only power connections, allowing for greater flexibility in maintaining the aesthetic of your home environment. Beyond its practical benefits, the speakers boast a contemporary design, crafted from premium materials that enhance their visual appeal. The artificial leather finish of the speaker enclosures distinguishes them from typical wood and plastic options. Two color variations are offered for the front panel, and the receiver’s design closely resembles that of a Mac Mini or Apple TV, making it a seamless addition to the “Apple” ecosystem.

The Wharfedale Diamond Active A1 series showcases a strong emphasis on wireless communication, yet it still accommodates wired connections. The receiver is equipped with optical and coaxial digital ports, along with a standard analog input featuring two RCA connectors. Wireless connectivity is primarily facilitated through Bluetooth, supporting the aptX protocol. In terms of compatibility, setup simplicity, and user-friendliness, this format stands out as one of the most straightforward options available today. The digital-to-analog converter processes digital streams with specifications of up to 24 bit / 96 kHz. The connection between the central module and the speakers operates adaptively within a frequency range of 5.2-5.8 MHz, minimizing interference from Wi-Fi networks and other household devices. The optimal distance between components is up to 20 meters, which is ample for most residential settings.

Additionally, there is a provision for a two-room setup, allowing each speaker to operate in mono mode and cover distinct areas of the living space. A standard remote control is also included. All components are powered by external power supplies. Each speaker features a 50 W amplifier, a broadband driver made from Kevlar fiber, and a fabric dome tweeter, the latter of which is recessed to create a horn effect. The acoustic design incorporates a phase inverter with ports located on the rear.

Wharfedale Diamond Active A1 3

At first glance, the price of the Wharfedale Diamond Active A1 may seem steep for a compact system, even with its high-quality design. However, once you experience the sound, everything falls into perspective. The Wharfedale Diamond Active A1 delivers a rich and refined audio performance, distinctly different from the lifeless output typical of standard stereo systems. The midrange is particularly impressive, bringing vocals, piano, and string instruments to life. The treble offers both clarity and an exceptional level of comfort, which are often seen as opposing qualities.

The sound presentation is calm and well-balanced. While this may not be ideal for dance music enthusiasts, it is important to recognize that we are dealing with a sophisticated microsystem rather than a mere pair of flashy speakers. All necessary compromises are handled with precision.

Wharfedale Diamond Active A1 5

The bass response of the bookshelf speakers remains within their physical limitations. If your musical preferences demand enhanced performance in the lower frequencies, you might want to explore the A2 model, which includes full-size floor-standing speakers. Initially, I had reservations about the impact of wireless audio transmission on the natural sound quality of the Hi-Fi system, particularly concerning potential digital coloration. This is not a low-cost device where such issues are anticipated. However, my concerns were completely alleviated. The inherent benefits of active speakers, along with the proper arrangement of both analog and digital pathways and the implementation of a proprietary wireless communication format, collectively produced the desired outcome, ensuring that the innovative inter-unit connection method did not compromise the musicality of the system.
