Focal has introduced an innovative product line designed for studio use. The Utopia Main 112 and 212 models are engineered to deliver premium sound quality in the control room, enabling recording engineers and producers to capture every subtle detail of the music being produced. Additionally, the company has created complementary amplifiers specifically for the Utopia Main 112 and Utopia Main 212. This new product line incorporates advanced technology from Focal’s existing Utopia series, including the beryllium tweeter and the M-shaped cone utilized in the midrange drivers.
Focal describes the new studio monitors as a “technological achievement designed to uphold accuracy even at elevated sound pressure levels within the studio setting, delivering an exceptional monitoring experience for reference recording, mixing, and mastering.”
The name “Utopia” directly alludes to the technology incorporated in Focal’s Utopia living room models. The cabinets of the studio monitors are crafted from thirty-millimetre-thick MDF panels, which have been meticulously studied and reinforced with a bracing mesh to eliminate warping. Additionally, a resonance reduction system has been integrated at the quarter-wave level. Extensive simulations were conducted to optimize bass accuracy while minimizing port noise.
The Utopia Main 212 monitors are equipped with dual 13-inch ‘W’ cone woofers, paired with two 5-inch M-shaped ‘W’ cone mid-range drivers, and a 1.5-inch M-shaped beryllium tweeter. In contrast, the Utopia Main 112 monitors consist of a single 13-inch ‘W’ cone woofer, a 5-inch M-shaped ‘W’ cone mid-range driver, and also feature a 1.5-inch M-shaped beryllium tweeter.
Each driver is powered by its dedicated amplifier channel, which is contained within a 4U high rack unit. The Utopia Main 212 amplification features two 500 Watt RMS class D stages for bass, two 180 Watt RMS class H stages for midrange, and 140 Watt RMS class H for treble. In contrast, the Utopia Main 112 amplification is more compact, offering 500 Watt RMS class D for bass, 180 Watt RMS class H for midrange, and 90 Watt RMS class H for treble.
