SMSL has expanded its VMV line with the D2R MK2, a full-size desktop DAC designed for both wired digital sources and wireless playback. The new model combines a ROHM BD34302EKV conversion stage with XMOS-based USB handling, broad high-resolution format support and a clocking system centered on an internal 10 MHz OCXO oscillator.
ROHM-based conversion with high-resolution format support
At the heart of the SMSL VMV D2R MK2 is the ROHM BD34302EKV DAC chip, a component choice that places the unit firmly in the company’s higher-end desktop digital lineup. USB processing is handled by an XMOS XU-316 interface operating over asynchronous USB 2.0, with the DAC specified to decode PCM up to 768 kHz at 32-bit resolution via USB and I²S.
Native DSD playback is supported up to DSD512 over USB, while DoP is available up to DSD256 through USB and up to DoP64 through optical and coaxial inputs. For users with disc transports, streamers or digital outputs limited to conventional S/PDIF bandwidth, the optical, coaxial and AES inputs support PCM up to 192 kHz at 24-bit resolution.
