Orange Amplification is best known for its (bass) guitar amplifiers, but the company also uses its brand name to make products for in and around the home. A lifestyle product that builds on the brand’s fame, the Orange Pyramid system is a compact hi-fi system that, according to its designers, delivers powerful sound and convenient connectivity that the company says is “a feast for the ears”, with a “warm and clean sound”.

Orange Amplification has been around since 1968 and is a pioneer in the field of guitar and bass amplification. The company also makes Bluetooth speakers and has wireless headphones in its portfolio. Why not use the brand name for other things too? After all, British Marshall has been doing that for a while, i.e. making Bluetooth speakers and headphones.

The Pyramid System is a compact hi-fi system that can receive a music signal via Bluetooth 5.0 with support for Qualcomm’s aptX. Music signal can also come in analogue via a 3.5 millimeter jack plug or a stereo cinch connection. The central pyramid-shaped box contains the amplifier and connecting electronics. Even if Bluetooth is selected, the top of the pyramid is blue and for analog wired input the top is green. If the top turns red, things are wrong, because the system is reaching its starting limit.

A maximum of 40 Watts RMS for four Ohms is available for each channel and the output stages operate in class D. The housing is made of wood and has white piano lacquer. The volume control is done with a large button on the front. There are two rotary knobs for tone control on the back.

According to the designers, effort has been made to adjust the sound for a pleasant listening experience. The Pyramid produces a so-called wave-balanced “analog sound spectrum”. This is a wonderful marketing slogan, but we don’t know exactly what it means. Well, Orange has its roots in guitar amplifiers and musicians are usually much more critical than consumers. So the sound may be fine.

The Pyramid System comes with two passive two-way speakers with a bass reflex housing. Orange says the speakers are designed to deliver clear and warm sound.

Finally, according to the manufacturer, the Pyrmaid System is built to the same rugged, road-ready construction standards as all of Orange’s professional amplifiers, which should make this a product that will last. Orange Amplification promises to continuously make inventory and replacement parts available well into the next decade.

The Pyramid System has a suggested retail price of just under £800 on the Orange Amplification website.
