Fostex TH919: Urushi Lacquer, BioDyna Drivers & Open-Back Japanese Masterpiece

The Fostex TH919 headphones are a new model that merges traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary acoustic technology. This model succeeds the TH900 series, which was first launched in 2012, but it has undergone a complete redesign: from the driver and housing to the overall structure.

At the core of the headphones is the enhanced 50-mm dynamic driver known as BioDyna. With its improved suspension design, it ensures stable diaphragm operation, delivering clear and well-defined bass without excessive boominess, natural midrange free from distortion, and transparent, expressive high frequencies. This sound profile maintains density and depth, capturing even the finest details of the recording.

To enhance comfort and reduce weight, the manufacturer has utilized a magnesium alloy for the body and mounts, resulting in a weight reduction of approximately 20% compared to aluminum. Additionally, rubber components are incorporated at the moving joints to minimize vibrations.

The domes are made of dense ash and covered with traditional urushi lacquer using the technology of the Japanese workshop Sakamoto Otozo Shoten, founded in 1900. Decor with silver foil creates a complex multi-layered pattern, and the combination of wood and hard lacquer itself provides fundamental low frequencies and extended highs. The open-back design with dual-layer laser-cut aluminum grille reproduces a wide soundstage and natural space with minimal listening fatigue.

The ear pads have a new shape with an inclined surface and a two-layer structure made of soft and elastic material. The outer layer is made of synthetic leather based on silk protein, which is characterized by increased wear resistance. The headband and pillow are covered with sheepskin, which increases comfort during long-term use.

The kit includes a detachable cable made of high-purity copper conductor (7N OFC) with a 3.5 mm jack, and in the future, a balanced 4.4 mm cable is planned to be released.
