Rega has launched the Rega Planar 3 RS Edition. RS stands for Rega Special and the new turntable is made from a brand new aluminium metal HPL laminate to achieve a new level of rigidity. The Rega Planar3 RS Edition comes almost ready to play as the tonearm and cartridge are factory fitted.

The Planar 3 RS Edition’s dark brushed metal plinth is edged in high-gloss black, creating a stunning platform for the iconic Planar 3. The RS Edition features a bespoke Neo Mk2 external power supply which also controls the platter speed. Each motor vibration circuit is manually tuned to suit each individual motor. The Planar 3 RS Edition’s low noise 24V motor drives the sub platter via the Reference EBLT belt for ultimate speed control accuracy. The turntable arrives ready to play with the handmade RB330 tonearm fitted and MM cartridge Nd5.
Some manufacturers go so far as to make their turntable chassis extra heavy, but Rega has been a pioneer in the use of ultra-rigid lightweight plinths for many years. The use of a lightweight particle core with a highly rigid phenolic resin skin was the basis for the high levels of performance achieved by the original Planar range. The new Planar 3 RS Edition takes this design philosophy to the next level by using a High Pressure Laminate (HPL), normally reserved for the Planar 6, Planar 8 and Planar 10 models for increased rigidity. In addition, this premium HPL features a brushed metallic dark aluminium skin with a beautiful satin finish. Rega’s dual brace system is mounted specifically where the increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing), which the designers claim creates a structurally sound “stressed beam” assembly.
This complex plinth design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonance, which adds unnatural distortions to the music. Likewise, heavier mass can transfer more unwanted energy, such as motor or bearing noise, directly to the spinning platter. The use of braces allows for double thickness phenolic resin in these key areas, directly addressing the problem of unwanted energy transfer.

The RB330 tonearm has been designed using the latest 3D CAD & CAM technology and is the culmination of over forty years of tonearm design experience. Featuring the latest bearing housing and tonearm tube, designed using intelligent mass redistribution, this arm has fewer points of potential resonance. Extreme stability, zero play in the bearings and almost friction-free movement of the new high precision bearing assemblies guarantee that the listener gets more information from the record groove than ever before, according to Rega.
The Rega Planar 3 RS Edition comes with a smoked dust cover and MM cartridge Nd5. As usual for the British manufacturer, the Planar 3 RS Edition comes with a lifetime warranty.
