The Pro-Ject Debut Pro B turntable succeeds the highly regarded Debut Pro model. It exemplifies the concept of a turntable featuring a “truly balanced circuit design.” Pro-Ject has previously developed phono preamplifiers and turntables with compatible wiring, as seen in the X1 B and X2 models. According to the manufacturer, the Debut Pro B is “an enhanced version of the original.” The balanced technology is designed to expand the functionality of the turntable. In addition to the standard RCA phono output connectors, this model includes a balanced MiniXLR output.
Textbook principles regarding analog signal transmission indicate that a balanced configuration is generally superior to an unbalanced one, assuming all other factors remain constant. However, this advantage is contingent upon achieving balance throughout the entire signal path and all associated components. Pro-Ject has ensured this balance in their design. Regarding the Debut Pro B, Pro-Ject asserts that every element of the turntable has been “redesigned for a higher level of performance.” The newly developed 8.6-inch tonearm features a composite construction of carbon and aluminum, along with a single-piece aluminum bearing block. Additionally, the turntable comes equipped with the Pick-It Pro Balanced cartridge, a newly designed balanced moving magnet cartridge created in partnership with Ortofon, which Pro-Ject claims will provide “a more vibrant, robust sound with greater dynamic range.”
The aluminum platter, featuring TPE damping, operates via a belt drive at speeds of 33.3, 45, and 78 rpm, just as before. The MDF cabinet is available in hand-applied finishes of black and the anticipated white gloss. This cabinet is supported by three aluminum feet that can be adjusted for height. Additionally, both the tonearm height and azimuth can be modified. Interestingly, the new model comes with the proprietary Connect-IT E RCA unbalanced cable, while the balanced MiniXLR cable must be acquired separately.
The Pro-Ject Debut Pro B turntable is priced at $800, which is £100 higher than the previous model. The Pick-It Pro Balanced cartridge is available for $200.
