The German Luphonic Labs is a relatively young manufacturer of turntables. The company started in 2020 and its newest turntable is the Modell R2. A tonearm is included.

Luphonic started at an inconvenient time, i.e. in 2020 just before the corona pandemic broke out, which subsequently gripped the world for almost two years. Luphonic survived the crisis and now produces a small range of high-quality turntables, tonearms and accessories for the consumer audio market.

The latest product is the Modell R2, a belt-driven turntable that comes with Luphonic’s own 9.5-inch long K2 with a gimbal-mounted tonearm. The R2’s subchassis consists of two layers of highly polished, white solid surface material, separated by a layer of vibration-dampening cellular rubber.

The black 24 millimeter thick turntable is made of an unspecified solid surface material and claims to guarantee detailed reproduction thanks to its low-resonance, homogeneous structure. The turntable weighs 10 kilograms and the dimensions are 44 x 35 x 12 centimeters (W x D x H). The chassis stands on height-adjustable feet. The black and white theme can be found on all of the company’s turntables.

The smooth-running synchronous motor is mounted on the bottom layer, separate from the disc bearing and tonearm. It is controlled by in-house developed motor electronics, with which both the amplitude and the phase shift of the two sine waves are individually adjusted to the built-in motor. This ensures an extremely quiet and low-vibration drive, the company says.

The turntable is operated with the proven puck for speeds of 33 1/3 and 45 revolutions per minute. An LED display provides information about the selected speed and other device parameters.

The recommended retail price for the Luphonic R2 is $3,690.
