Dynavector has updated a cartridge that was first released in 1978. It is the Dynavector 10X series, a high-output MC cartridge that has been revised several times since its introduction in 1978, but has also remained basically the same.
Dynavector 10XA
In both 1978 and 1981, the 10X series won the Design and Engineering Award at the CES (Consumer’s Electronics Show) in Chicago and, according to the manufacturer, the cartridge continues to fascinate audiophiles around the world with its distinctive red housing.
Since its debut, the 10X series has continued to evolve to provide listeners with a better experience. In 2003, a solid aluminum headstock was introduced for increased rigidity, creating a better platform for attaching to the boom head. In 2018, the 10X5 MkII replaced the traditional elliptical stylus tip with a “Shibata III” line contact stylus, which designers say has improved tracking.
The 2025 refresh takes the 10X series to new levels of performance with a newly developed magnetic circuit that uses Dynavector’s patented “Special Magnetic Annealing” technology. There are two versions of the 10XA, a high-output version and a low-output version.
Dynavector 10XA-H: High output MC cartridge
Dynavector’s unique coil winding technology has made high-output MC (Moving Coil) cartridges possible. By winding an ultra-fine wire multiple times around the coil, an output voltage of 2.8 mV is achieved, making an additional preamplifier or step-up transformer unnecessary. The sonic advantages of an MC cartridge are retained combined with the ease of use of an MM cartridge. The recommended load impedance is 1,000 Ohms or higher. Connection to an MM phono input with a 47 kOhm load is also possible.
Dynavector 10XA-L: Low output MC cartridge
The low output 10XA-L model offers an output voltage of 0.5 mV, which ensures excellent compatibility with a wide range of step-up transformers and preamplifiers. With this model the listener can fully experience the unique qualities of MC reproduction. The recommended load impedance is 100 ohms or higher.
Dynavector 10XA: wide compatibility
The milled aluminum headstock ensures a secure and solid connection to the arm head. With a compliance of 12 mm/N and a total weight of 7.5 grams, the 10XA is compatible with most tonearms on the market.
