Compact amplifiers have come a long way, and the BT20A MAX from Fosi Audio is a good example of just how much performance can now be packed into a small metal box. Aimed squarely at desktop systems and compact living-room setups, the BT20A MAX is designed to be the kind of amplifier you can drop into a system and immediately start enjoying—whether you’re running passive bookshelf speakers, adding a subwoofer, or streaming music wirelessly.

Despite its modest size, the BT20A MAX is built with power in mind. It’s capable of driving speakers with impedances from 2 to 8 ohms, making it flexible enough for everything from small nearfield monitors to more demanding passive speakers. The amplifier is designed to run from a 32–48V external power supply, giving it the electrical headroom needed to stay stable even when pushed hard.

Wireless-first, but not wireless-only

One of the BT20A MAX’s key strengths is its modern Bluetooth implementation. Using a Qualcomm QCC3095 chipset, the amplifier supports an unusually wide range of codecs, including aptX Adaptive, aptX Lossless, and LDAC, alongside the usual SBC and AAC options. That means higher-quality wireless audio is very much on the menu, whether you’re streaming from a phone, tablet, or computer. Wireless range is rated at up to 15 meters, enough for most rooms or desktop setups.

For those who prefer cables, Fosi Audio hasn’t cut corners. The BT20A MAX includes two analog RCA inputs, making it easy to connect multiple sources such as a DAC, streamer, or turntable with an external phono stage. There’s also a dedicated subwoofer output, allowing the amp to serve as the heart of a compact 2.1 system without needing additional hardware.

The amplifier features Bluetooth 6.0 based on the Qualcomm QCC3095 chip, supporting SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, aptX Adaptive, aptX Lossless, and LDAC codecs.

Simple control

Day-to-day operation is intentionally straightforward. Volume and input selection can be handled directly from the front panel, or via the included infrared remote, which is especially useful when the amplifier is placed on a shelf or media unit rather than a desk.

Inside, the layout reflects a more serious approach than the price and size might suggest. Digital and analog sections are powered separately to reduce interference, and ELNA capacitors are used in key positions for signal stability. To keep temperatures in check, Fosi Audio has added an active cooling system with a low-noise fan and carefully placed ventilation—an unusual but practical choice in a compact, high-output design.

On paper, the BT20A MAX delivers up to 300 watts per channel at peak power into 4 ohms, with a continuous output of up to 180 watts per channel under the same load. Claimed distortion is as low as 0.003%, and the signal-to-noise ratio reaches 112 dB, figures that would have been unthinkable for a desktop-sized amplifier not long ago.
