Rockna Wavedream Reference: Flagship reference-grade DAC from Romania

Founded in 1999 by Nicolae Jitariu, Rockna Audio has introduced two new reference-grade DACs that exemplify the company’s commitment to technical innovation. The manufacturer emphasizes proprietary technology, minimizing reliance on standard solutions. The central processing is powered by a robust AMD ZYNQ chip, complemented by four Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Each FPGA manages its own discrete ladder DAC module, facilitating channel-separated and symmetrical analog conversion, with two FPGAs dedicated to each channel. In a departure from typical asynchronous sample rate conversion, Rockna opts for its own PLL clock system to reduce unwanted artifacts during digital-to-analog conversion and enhance audio quality.

The Wavedream Reference features five digital inputs, including S/PDIF optical and coaxial, AES/EBU, USB, and I2S, with all incoming signals being upsampled. Depending on the input signal, the output is clocked at either 705.6 or 768 kHz before being processed by the proprietary ladder DAC (R2R). Users can select from three unique filters: linear, minimum phase, and hybrid phase. Furthermore, the device includes an integrated network renderer, enabling music streaming via LAN, with support for Roon, Upnp, OpenHome, Airplay, HQPNAA, and Spotify Connect.

The electronic interior is intricate, featuring a ten-layer printed circuit board. The circuit design has been optimized to ensure the shortest possible paths for clock and data signals, utilizing high-quality connectors for the cards. Additionally, the power supply and display’s toroidal transformers are protected by copper shielding.

It is not surprising that the output section is designed with discretion. Rockna employs JFET and bipolar transistors in a class A topology, ensuring low output impedance. Both balanced and unbalanced outputs are provided.

The Rockna Wavedream Reference can be controlled through the touchscreen display on the front panel, the included IR remote control, or via an app compatible with iOS and Android. The app offers enhanced capabilities for detailed adjustments and fine-tuning of the conversion process.

Rockna Wavedream Reference Signature Edition

The Rockna Wavedream Reference is offered in a Signature Edition as well. The distinctions lie in the choice of superior components for the R2R DAC, the FPGA bitrate, the analog output section, and the power supply. According to the manufacturer, these differences are quantifiable and, more significantly, perceptible to the listener.
