Sony MDR-Z7M2: Closed-back reference-class headphones

Sony MDR-Z7M2
Sony MDR-Z7M2

Sony MDR-Z7M2 are closed-back, reference-class headphones that use proprietary advanced technologies and are part of the audiophile Hi-Fi line, and are intended for both mobile use with portable sources and at home. We recommend modern players with a balanced output suitable for playing Hi-Res audio.

The magnesium dome cone and aluminum-coated LCD polymer film surround deliver high-resolution audio up to 100 kHz for maximum clarity and detail. The closed case protects well from external noise. There are no backlashes or creaks. The rim is made of aluminum alloy and the ear pads are made of polyurethane foam and synthetic leather. Flexible, lightweight, durable, these headphones fit your ears comfortably. Provides lightness and durability for many years of use.

The headphone’s ear pad is made of low-reflective urethane foam and covered with a synthetic leather cover, which is stitched to provide even pressure across the entire surface of the head and a secure fit thanks to its ergonomic shape. It minimizes sound loss while increasing airtightness and delivering powerful, heavy bass.

The Sony MDR-Z7M2 model is equipped with two oxygen-free copper cables with silver plating, minimizing resistance and signal loss during transmission. This prevents linear distortion, enhances detail and provides clear high frequencies. A balanced cable 1.2 m long with a 4-pin gold-plated Pentacon plug with a diameter of 4.4 mm and an unbalanced cable 3 m long with a gold-plated minijack 3.5 mm plug and an adapter for a 6.3 mm jack. The kit also includes a carrying/storage case.

Sony presents the MDR-Z7M2 headphones, the “successor” to the successful MDR-Z7 model. The new product inherits technologies from the premium MDR-Z1R headphones from the Signature Series line, such as the proprietary grille, the design of which is inspired by the Fibonacci sequence, and the included balanced connecting cable with a diameter of 4.4 mm.

Sony’s commitment to audio excellence is further demonstrated by the fact that the MDR-Z7M2 headphones feature a wide frequency response, dynamic range, and linear frequency response, offering listeners a realistic reproduction of the “atmosphere” surrounding musical instruments and voices; is a three-dimensional surround sound system that exists in a live music space. Featuring a 70mm HD driver with an aluminum-coated LCD resin film diaphragm with a larger dome and optimized profile, the Sony Z7M2 headphones provide the listener with a clearer music experience.

The Sony MDR-Z7M2 headphones feature new drivers based on the drivers from the successful Sony MDR-Z1R, including improved aluminum-coated LCD polymer film diaphragms for natural presentation with low coloration in the mid and high frequency ranges. The enlarged diaphragm dome with an optimized profile provides clear sound in the mid- and low-frequency ranges, as well as detailed sound in the mid- and high-frequency ranges. The speakers feature larger magnets (twice the size of the Sony MDR-Z7) for increased power output and therefore clearer music.

The grid, shaped like Fibonacci spirals, is made of hard rubber that is both thin and durable. This minimizes the muffling effect created by the grille at ultra-high frequencies and ensures smooth sound reproduction throughout the entire frequency range. In addition, a special acoustic port on the body – Beat Response Control – controls the air flow behind the speaker and optimizes the movement of the diaphragm when reproducing low frequencies. At the same time, this technology improves bass transient response and accurately conveys rhythm.

Other features of the Sony MDR-Z7M2 headphones are the use of special lead-free solder and corzon alloy for the contacts in the headphone connectors. Special “sonic” solder developed by Sony is also used to minimize signal transmission losses and ensure clean contacts. Due to its low resistance and high durability, corzon alloy (a type of copper alloy) is an ideal material for making electrical contacts.

The Sony MDR-Z7M2 headphones come with two different cables: a standard unbalanced cable and a balanced interconnect cable. A swivel mechanism with a locking rim is used to secure connections and improve durability. Additionally, the copper balanced cable is silver-plated for greater detail, smoother treble and reduced interference.

To ensure greater wearing comfort, the Sony MDR-Z7M2’s ear pads are ergonomically shaped with a seamless 3D connection. This provides a higher level of comfort with balanced pressure. Even over long periods of use, the pads retain their ergonomic shape, specially designed to be comfortable for every user to wear. Their form-fitting structure reduces sound dispersion through improved sealing, delivering powerful, deep bass. The ear pads of the headphones are made of soft polyurethane foam, absorbing and releasing moisture. This helps reduce possible ear congestion and ensure comfortable listening.

The faux leather headband and aluminum alloy headband and adjuster ensure that the Sony MDR-Z7M2 is lightweight and durable. Special anodizing provides increased durability of the temple and minimizes the appearance of scratches that can occur during daily use. Particular attention was paid to the design of the internal axis structure of the Sony MDR-Z7M2 headphones, where the lateral pressure point is closer to the head. This guarantees increased durability for the user under all circumstances. The Sony MDR-Z7M2 headphones are equipped with a silent connection mechanism that minimizes mechanical noise at the connection points of moving parts, providing a quiet listening experience for the most demanding user.
