Yamaha M-5000: High-End Fully Balanced Power Amplifier with MOSFET Design

Over the course of its 130 years of existence, Yamaha has become the world’s largest manufacturer of musical instruments and audio equipment. The Yamaha M-5000 amplifier embodies the spirit of time-honed craftsmanship, which, combined with market-leading innovation, makes it a model of high-fidelity sound reproduction.

The Yamaha M-5000 uses a carefully considered, fully symmetrical design in which the left and right channels are physically isolated and distributed in separate electrical circuits. The deliberately simple layout of the components, which is also designed to minimize the signal path, reduces energy loss and provides the low impedance necessary for high-quality reproduction.

Unlike conventional amplifiers, where the power is supplied through a high-power transistor and the negative is connected to ground, the Yamaha M-5000 is connected directly to each positive and negative side of the output stage. Complete isolation of the entire power amplifier circuit eliminates all unwanted effects of short-term voltage fluctuations and ground noise. This symmetrical design is also ideal for MOSFET power amplifiers and improves amplification quality for low-impedance speakers.

The Yamaha M-5000 amplifier is designed from the ground up for maximum rigidity to reduce unwanted vibration and ensure optimum performance. In addition, the use of a mechanical grounding concept, realized by mounting the power transformer, bypass capacitors and heat sink directly to a rigid structure with bolts, provides complete support for the components and eliminates the influence of vibration.

The massive toroidal core transformer, which contributes to the reproduction of the highest quality sound, is equipped with a 3 mm thick brass base, which suppresses unwanted vibrations. In addition, the power transformer does not affect the surrounding sound circuits, since it has a low leakage flux. Copper wires, brought out of the core winding, help to reduce impedance, significantly reducing energy loss compared to traditional designs.

Thick wires and screw connections used in the Yamaha M-5000 amplifier help to reduce impedance, reducing energy loss that usually occurs in traditional connections and wiring. The use of screws and brass terminals located directly on the blocking capacitors, rather than soldering, ensures a reliable, low-impedance connection.

The use of screws and brass terminals located directly on the blocking capacitors, rather than soldering, ensures a reliable, low-impedance connection. And the feet are no exception. The original feet made of solid brass act as fully supporting stops for the unit, and can also be used in combination with pads to protect delicate surfaces from scratches.

The front panel of the Yamaha M-5000 amplifier features large, high-precision level indicators, with which listeners can visually monitor the dynamics of the music. These high-quality indicators with Asahi glass, 7 mm thick, complement the luxurious and exceptionally elegant appearance of the Yamaha M-5000 amplifier.

The Yamaha M-5000 uses oversized screw terminals to ensure ease of use and reliable connections. The terminals are machined from a solid block of brass. Yamaha’s original design features meticulous attention to detail and premium quality. The 3mm thick base is also made of pure brass, a strong and rigid material. It helps reduce distortion due to its non-magnetic properties.
