Castle Acoustics has introduced the Tintagel and Walmer loudspeaker families, adding two monitor models and two floorstanders to its British-made range. All four speakers are developed, manufactured and finished at the company’s operation in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

Four models complete the new British-made lineup

The launch creates a three-series collection comprising Tintagel, Walmer and Windsor. Each family contains a monitor and a floorstanding model, providing a choice of cabinet sizes and acoustic configurations for different rooms and systems.

Tintagel forms the more accessible part of the collection, while Walmer sits above it with different driver materials and a more elaborate technical platform. The four new speakers are Castle’s first introductions since the Windsor Earl and Windsor Duke marked the company’s return to British production in 2023.

Castle’s older Avon, Knight and Richmond ranges remain part of the wider portfolio, although they are not manufactured entirely in Britain. By contrast, the Tintagel and Walmer models are made from beginning to end in the United Kingdom.

Tintagel combines fiber-cone drivers with silk-dome tweeters

The Tintagel 1 is a two-way monitor built around a 130mm advanced-fiber mid-bass driver and a specially developed 28mm silk-dome tweeter. A shallow waveguide around the tweeter is intended to manage high-frequency dispersion and maintain a consistent tonal balance across a wider listening area.

For larger rooms or listeners seeking a floorstanding format, the Tintagel 2 uses a 2.5-way configuration. It combines two 150mm advanced-fiber drivers with the same 28mm silk-dome tweeter. Its bass-reflex system fires downward into a defined air space created by the plinth, an arrangement designed to control low-frequency output while reducing sensitivity to room placement.

The fiber-composite cones use a developed mixture intended to balance low moving mass with inherent damping. Both Tintagel models also employ cast-aluminum driver chassis, internal bracing, bitumen damping panels and long-fiber wool absorption material. Their crossovers are developed specifically to integrate the drivers within their respective enclosures rather than functioning as standalone, interchangeable networks.

The compact Tintagel 1 uses a large flared rear port. Both Tintagel speakers have an 8-ohm impedance and medium-to-high sensitivity, positioning them for use with a broad selection of amplifiers.

Walmer introduces woven carbon-fiber and ribbon drivers

Walmer represents the more technically ambitious of the two new families. Its principal distinctions include woven carbon-fiber cone drivers and a 12 x 45mm ribbon tweeter, replacing the fiber-composite and silk-dome combination used by Tintagel.

The Walmer 1 is a two-way monitor featuring a 130mm woven carbon-fiber mid-bass unit and the ribbon high-frequency driver. The floorstanding Walmer 2 moves to a three-way architecture, with two 150mm woven carbon-fiber bass drivers and a separate 115mm woven carbon-fiber midrange unit accompanying the same ribbon tweeter.

The dedicated midrange arrangement allows the Walmer 2’s bass, midrange and treble sections to operate within more specialized frequency bands. Carbon fiber was selected for its stiffness-to-weight ratio, with the cone construction intended to resist unwanted flexing while maintaining low moving mass.

Cabinet production remains central to Castle’s identity

Castle traces its history to 1973, when the company was founded in Skipton, North Yorkshire, by three figures with previous experience at Wharfedale and Quad. Its early reputation was built around integrated loudspeaker development, with drivers, crossovers and cabinet volumes engineered together and complemented by furniture-grade wood finishes.

International Audio Group acquired the Castle brand and its associated manufacturing processes in 2007. Castle subsequently gained access to new research, engineering and production resources, while retaining an emphasis on in-house acoustic development and real-wood veneer cabinetry.

That approach continues with Tintagel and Walmer. Veneers are hand selected, cabinet panels are bonded under high pressure and then left to dry naturally for 48 hours. The enclosures are subsequently sanded and finished by hand, with quality checks conducted throughout production. Driver units and crossover networks are designed for the specific cabinet in which they will be used.

Positioning and availability

Tintagel is intended as the straightforward entry point into Castle’s current British-made range, with configurations designed for relatively flexible placement and amplifier matching. Walmer provides the step-up option, introducing ribbon tweeters, woven carbon-fiber diaphragms and, in the Walmer 2, a dedicated three-way driver layout.
