Shanling has introduced the CD50, a compact CD player that combines disc playback with digital-to-analog conversion, preamplifier functionality and a built-in headphone amplifier. Designed for desktop systems and installations where space is limited, it is the first model in the company's new compact 50 Series.
A compact player focused on physical media
Measuring 188 x 205 x 53mm and weighing approximately 1.6kg, the CD50 occupies considerably less space than a conventional full-width hi-fi component. Shanling has equipped the player with a front-loading disc tray and an HD850 laser mechanism.
The CD50 supports commercially produced CDs as well as recordable CD-R and rewritable CD-RW media. Its feature set remains centered on disc playback: the unit does not include music-streaming services or Bluetooth connectivity. That focused approach distinguishes it from network players and multifunction digital hubs, while its compact dimensions make it suitable for smaller hi-fi and desktop arrangements.
Playback can be managed through physical controls on the front panel, the supplied infrared remote control or the integrated 2.2-inch display. Product images show the CD50 in both silver and black finishes.
Cirrus Logic conversion and analog output
At the heart of the CD50's digital-to-analog stage is a Cirrus Logic CS43198 DAC. This allows the player to serve not only as a CD transport but also as an analog source connected directly to an amplifier or active speaker system through its stereo RCA output.
Shanling specifies an output level of 2.6Vrms for the analog RCA connection. The published figures also include a dynamic range of 124dB, a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz at -0.4dB and total harmonic distortion plus noise of 0.002 percent. Rubycon capacitors are used within the analog circuitry.
The CD50 also incorporates preamplifier functionality, broadening its potential role in a compact system. Users who prefer a separate DAC can bypass the internal conversion stage and route the digital signal through either the coaxial S/PDIF output or optical TOSLINK output.
Single-ended and balanced headphone outputs
A built-in headphone amplifier is one of the CD50's most notable additions compared with a basic disc player. The front panel carries both a conventional 3.5mm stereo output and a balanced 4.4mm Pentaconn connection, allowing the player to operate as a self-contained CD listening station without a separate headphone amplifier.
The 3.5mm connection is rated to deliver up to 210mW into a 32-ohm load. The balanced 4.4mm output raises the specified maximum to 830mW into 32 ohms and uses two SGM8262 amplifier chips. Shanling lists a dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio of 126dB for the headphone section.
These two connections give owners a choice between widely used single-ended headphone cables and balanced 4.4mm designs. Volume and playback controls are located alongside the display, keeping the primary functions accessible when the CD50 is positioned within arm's reach on a desk or shelf.
System connections and availability
Rear-panel connectivity covers analog stereo RCA, coaxial S/PDIF and optical TOSLINK outputs. Together, these connections enable the CD50 to feed an analog amplifier through its internal DAC or operate as a transport with an external digital converter. The integrated headphone stage provides another playback route without requiring additional electronics.
Shanling has not announced availability details or a USD price for the CD50. The company has identified it as the first member of its compact 50 Series, but no further models in that range were detailed alongside the player.
With its small chassis, dedicated CD mechanism, CS43198 DAC and unusually capable selection of headphone outputs, the Shanling CD50 brings several core hi-fi functions together without adding wireless or streaming features. Final market timing and pricing remain to be confirmed.
