Kanto Audio has introduced the Obi3 2nd Gen, a revised belt-drive turntable designed to bring adjustable controls and flexible connectivity to entry-level vinyl systems. Its main technical feature is a speed sensor that monitors platter rotation and applies corrections throughout playback.
Sensor-controlled belt-drive playback
Rather than relying solely on the motor to maintain the selected speed, the Obi3 2nd Gen measures the platter's actual rotation while a record is playing. The system continuously corrects deviations to maintain consistent speed and pitch from the opening groove to the end of a side.
Electronic speed selection allows users to switch between 33 1/3 and 45 RPM without moving the drive belt by hand. Kanto has also included a pitch control with a range of plus or minus 10 percent, giving users an additional level of manual adjustment.
An automatic stop function halts the platter when the record side finishes. This prevents the stylus from remaining in the runout groove indefinitely, while the turntable otherwise retains a hands-on operating approach.
Aluminum platter and adjustable tonearm
The turntable uses a weighted aluminum platter mounted on a substantial engineered-wood plinth. This construction distinguishes the Obi3 2nd Gen from models that rely more heavily on plastic components, with the platter mass and rigid base intended to limit the transfer of unwanted vibration to the record groove.
A J-shaped aluminum tonearm provides more setup control than the fixed mechanisms commonly found on fully automatic entry-level turntables. Its adjustable counterweight allows the user to balance the arm and set tracking force, while a separate anti-skating adjustment helps manage the stylus's movement across the record.
Reference markings are provided to support accurate setup. A manual cueing lever lowers the stylus onto the groove in a controlled manner, making the Obi3 2nd Gen a more interactive design than turntables built around sealed tonearm assemblies and automatic start functions.
An Audio-Technica AT3600L cartridge is preinstalled, so cartridge mounting is not required during initial setup. Users will still need to balance the tonearm and configure the tracking settings before playback.
Wired and wireless connection options
The Obi3 2nd Gen has an RCA output and an integrated phono preamplifier that can be bypassed. With the phono stage engaged, the turntable can connect to an amplifier or compatible powered speakers through a line-level input. Bypassing it allows the deck to be used with an external phono stage or an amplifier equipped with a phono input.
Bluetooth 5.3 is also included for wireless playback. This gives owners the option of sending audio to compatible wireless speakers or other Bluetooth-equipped systems without adding a separate transmitter.
Five finishes and installation accessories
Kanto has given the revised model a clean exterior with details including recessed hinges and a polished aluminum platter. Five finishes will be offered: black, white, green, ice blue and walnut.
The turntable has a footprint of 43.2 by 36.3 cm, allowing it to fit on a shelf, desk or sideboard where space is limited. Kanto includes the principal installation accessories in the box: a dust cover, slipmat, 45 RPM adapter, counterweight, RCA cable and grounding cable.
Entry-level positioning and availability
The Obi3 2nd Gen is positioned for listeners who want a straightforward first turntable without giving up tonearm adjustment, electronic speed selection or connectivity choices. Its combination of a preinstalled cartridge and built-in phono stage simplifies initial installation, while the counterweight, anti-skating control and pitch adjustment preserve a degree of manual setup.
Worldwide availability is scheduled to begin in early September. All five announced finishes are expected to be offered at launch.
With active platter-speed correction, adjustable tonearm controls and both wired and Bluetooth connectivity, the Kanto Obi3 2nd Gen offers a broad feature set for newcomers who want a belt-drive turntable with room for hands-on setup.
