Phasemotion has introduced the LT-1000, a transformer-based component designed to adjust signal level before it reaches an amplifier. With selectable boost, attenuation and mute settings, it addresses systems in which the volume control becomes too sensitive over a narrow part of its operating range.
Five settings for practical volume adjustment
The LT-1000 provides five positions on its signal-level selector: +6 dB, 0 dB, -6 dB, -12 dB and ∞. These settings allow the unit to increase the incoming music signal, pass it without a level change, reduce it by one of two fixed amounts or mute it completely.
Attenuation is intended to make an amplifier’s volume control easier to use when a source provides more output than the system needs. Rather than reaching the preferred listening level with only a small movement of the volume control, users can reduce the signal before amplification and work across a broader, more manageable adjustment range. Custom transformer construction
At the center of the LT-1000 is a purpose-designed transformer using a custom 0.1 mm Super Malloy core. Its windings employ PC-TripleC wiring developed specifically for transformer applications.
The internal transformers are arranged in what Phasemotion describes as an almost monaural configuration. This layout is specified to deliver 100 dB of separation between channels. According to the manufacturer, the combination of transformer design, core material, winding conductor and channel layout supports clear, precise presentation of the soundstage.
The LT-1000’s approach is based on transformer action rather than conventional electronic gain adjustment. Its fixed positions also make the chosen amount of boost or attenuation immediately identifiable from the front-panel control.
Galvanic isolation for connected audio systems
Signal-level management is not the LT-1000’s only intended role. Phasemotion also identifies galvanic isolation as a potential application, particularly between a streaming network and the rest of a hi-fi installation.
A transformer can separate the electrical grounds of connected parts of a system while still transferring the music signal.
