British audio manufacturer Wilson Benesch introduced the GMT System Turntable, a high-end model, approximately a year and a half ago. Alongside its launch, a range of compatible turntable cartridges was also revealed. The Tessellate Ti series has now emerged, showcasing the latest advancements in cartridge design, utilizing cutting-edge materials and technologies to deliver an exceptional audio experience.

The new Tesselate Ti series comprises three models, namely the Ti-B (boron), the Ti-S (sapphire) and the top model Ti-D (diamond). According to the manufacturers, all Tessellate Ti cartridges are characterised by maximum precision and musical detail. The cartridge housing was developed in collaboration with Renishaw PLC and the University of Sheffield and is manufactured using the latest 3D additive manufacturing technology. In the so-called selective laser sintering (SLS), multiple high-power lasers are used to weld titanium particles together layer by layer, thus constructing a one-piece pickup housing that contains no unnecessary mass. The unique crystal structure of the material used makes previously unattainable internal damping possible.

The semi-open architecture of the cartridge housing is informed by findings from the development of earlier turntable cartridges. Notably, Wilson Benesch pioneered the first carbon fiber cartridge housing and arm head. They discovered that a curved surface on the arm head of the cartridges provided considerable sonic benefits. The Tessellate Ti cartridges utilize this semi-open design, resulting in enhanced rigidity, reduced mass, and optimal damping while minimizing reflective surfaces.

Wilson Benesch employs a cutting-edge hybrid stylus carrier design that integrates advanced materials with unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber damping. This innovative approach adds minimal weight while significantly enhancing stiffness and damping properties. Depending on the specific model, the hybrid stylus carrier can be crafted from boron, sapphire, or diamond, each offering distinct acoustic characteristics that enhance the overall performance and sound quality of the cartridge.

The company dedicates substantial resources to research and development in audio technology. Their design team collaborates with esteemed partners such as Renishaw PLC and the University of Sheffield, utilizing state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques and premium materials like carbon fiber and titanium. The Tessellate Ti series exemplifies years of rigorous research and embodies Wilson Benesch’s commitment to achieving sonic excellence.
