During the InfoComm fair in Las Vegas this week, the American manufacturer Theory Audio Design showed its first outdoor speakers to the public. The ic6-Bollard is a 6.5-inch full-range omnidirectional radiator and the iws12-Bollard is a 12-inch subwoofer. Interested parties must wait until the fourth quarter of 2024 for delivery.

The Theory brand made its official debut at InfoComm 2023 with its 6.5-inch ceiling speaker ic6. Through careful processing and computer-optimized tuned ports, the IC6 delivers low-frequency bandwidth, punch and resolution, plus wide dispersion. The ic6 can be combined with Theory’s optional all-weather grille or installed in open ceilings and exposed environments when integrated into one of Theory’s ic6 pendant enclosures.
Building on Theory’s ic6 Acoustic Core platform, the new ic6-Bollard is the version of the ic6 installed in a dark chocolate-colored (and paintable) stainless steel housing. Once integrated, the ic6-Bollard becomes a full-range speaker providing uniform 360-degree coverage. Combine it with the new iws12-Bollard subwoofer to create high-end sound in the garden or elsewhere, according to the manufacturer.
Theory Audio Design is a custom-install specialist and hundreds of IC6-Bollard speakers can be used for large distributed installations. The ic6 includes a switch-selectable 70V/100V transformer that can be controlled directly by Theory’s DLC-250.4d 4-channel speaker controller. The DLC-250.4d can drive up to 16 Theory 16 Ohm speakers in Lo-Z mode, or up to 64 in Hi-Z mode, all from a relatively compact half-rack chassis.
“Theory is disrupting the status quo with a small portfolio of highly capable and flexible audio products, and the ic6 and iws12 are perfect examples of that,” said Paul Hales, CEO and product designer for Theory Audio Design. “These two new Theory speakers can be used for in-ceiling, suspended, damp, wall, surface and now landscape installations, while offering premium audio performance and design.”
The Theory ic6-Bollard and iws12-Bollard will be available in the fourth quarter of 2024.
