The unique prototype Monitor Audio Concept 50 gained a name and went into series – the British company introduced top-end speaker systems called Hyphn .
The name of the novelty can be translated as a stylized spelling of the hyphen. However, Hyphn (pronounced Heifen ) is actually an architectural term meaning a link between two large building elements. As a matter of fact, this link is a mid/high-frequency array that connects two bass towers. At almost 140 cm tall and weighing 106.9 kg, each Hyphn loudspeaker is equipped with a total of eleven drivers that provide a frequency range of 18 Hz to 60 kHz .
The design of acoustics uses a top Monitor Audio tweeter – MPD (Micro Pleated Diaphragm) of the third generation. In this case, the size of the radiator is minimized to implement the key concept of these speakers: to obtain an analogue of a coaxial speaker with all its advantages, but without the traditional disadvantages, such as modulation of the RF signal by the midrange driver cone.
The tweeter is surrounded by an array of six two-inch midrange drivers. They are located extremely close and thus provide the widest possible radiation pattern with an actually point source of radiation. This is vital for proper soundstage shaping. The crossover frequency between the tweeter and midrange array is 3.7 kHz . Inside a pair of linked Hyphn cabinets are four eight-inch woofers . They are arranged in pairs opposite and operate in the range up to 350 Hz . This configuration minimizes possible vibrations that can detrimentally affect the mid/high unit. Nevertheless, additional vibration isolation measures have been taken in the development of the acoustic design of the speakers themselves.
The shells are made of mineral-filled acrylic polymer. Their wall thickness varies from half an inch to an inch. Matte exterior finish options: black, white and British Racing Green. The crossover filters were calculated and assembled not only taking into account the maximum transparency for the signal, but also with a multiple power margin. Considering an impedance of 4 ohms and a sensitivity of 86 dB , the recommended amplifier power is 200 – 1600 watts .
