Rotel has announced that the final version of the Rotel Michi Q5 Transport DAC will be available for purchase in early March 2025. After a preview at the Ascot HiFi show in late 2024, the retail version will showcase several enhancements in both hardware and design. Initially introduced in September 2024, the Michi Q5 CD Transport DAC has undergone upgrades and is now poised for release next month.
A standout feature of the Michi Q5 Transport DAC is its high-quality digital-to-analog converter, which utilizes the ES9028PRO chip from ESS Technology. While the pre-production model already incorporated this DAC chip, the final version refines its application with a fully balanced differential circuit. This advancement results in reduced noise levels and a purer signal at both the XLR and RCA analog outputs, further elevating the already remarkable performance of the Michi Q5 CD Transport DAC.
Michi demonstrates its dedication to precision mechanics through the top-loading optical disc transport featured in the Michi Q5 CD Transport DAC. Constructed on a CNC machined aluminum chassis, the mechanism is now supported by a floating spring suspension system, enhancing vibration isolation. This enhancement leads to more precise disc reading, minimizing interference and elevating overall sound accuracy. A notable aesthetic update includes the incorporation of glass slits on the CD loader lid, allowing visibility of the disc during playback.
The Michi Q5 CD Transport DAC features two custom-designed toroidal power transformers that independently supply power to the digital and analog stages. Furthermore, the final iteration of this player guarantees complete isolation of the power supply for the optical disc transport motor, effectively preventing any interference with sensitive audio circuits.
Beyond its capabilities as a premium CD player, the Michi Q5 CD Transport DAC also functions as an external digital-to-analog converter. It includes a variety of digital inputs, such as a USB-B port, allowing the device to accept digital streams in PCM format with specifications up to 32 bit / 384 kHz, as well as MQA and DSD 4X formats. However, the audio resolution for signals received through the coaxial and optical inputs is capped at 24 bit / 192 kHz.
The final iteration of the player maintains the sleek minimalist design characteristic of the Michi brand, featuring a high-resolution TFT display that enhances the visualization of album artwork. Additionally, the inclusion of remote control functionality through the provided remote and automation capabilities via RS232 and Ethernet facilitates user-friendly operation across diverse listening settings.
