McIntosh has introduced the MX124, a 13.4-channel AV processor designed to serve as the control center of an advanced home cinema system. It combines immersive audio decoding, four independently managed subwoofer outputs, 8K-capable HDMI connectivity, room calibration and integrated music streaming in a single component.

Flexible 13.4-channel system layouts

The MX124 processes 13 audio channels and supports speaker configurations up to 7.4.6 or 9.4.4. Its four independent subwoofer outputs double the number offered by its predecessor, giving system designers more flexibility when integrating multiple low-frequency channels into larger rooms or complex installations.

Immersive audio compatibility includes Dolby Atmos, DTS:X Pro, Sony 360 Reality Audio and MPEG-H Audio. These formats allow the processor to address surround, height and subwoofer channels across a range of system layouts rather than tying it to one fixed speaker arrangement.

Digital-to-analog conversion is handled by nine 32-bit DAC chips. McIntosh has also included bass and treble controls, providing an additional level of adjustment alongside the MX124's more comprehensive room-calibration tools.

Dirac Live and Audyssey calibration options

Room optimization is a central part of the MX124's feature set. The processor is supplied with licenses for Dirac Live Room Correction, Dirac Live Bass Control and Audyssey MultEQ XT32, allowing installers and owners to select a calibration platform suited to the room and speaker configuration.

Dirac Live Bass Control is particularly relevant to the MX124's four-subwoofer architecture, where multiple bass sources may need to be coordinated across the listening area. The availability of both Dirac and Audyssey also gives integrators a choice of setup workflows rather than limiting the processor to a single correction system.

Seven HDMI inputs with 8K video support

Video connectivity comprises seven HDMI inputs and three HDMI outputs. Two outputs serve the primary video zone, while the third can feed an independent display in a second zone. One HDMI output supports eARC for receiving audio from a compatible television.

Every HDMI input and the two primary outputs can handle video signals up to 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz. Supported video technologies include Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG and IMAX Enhanced, alongside HDCP 2.3, Rec. 2020 color, 4:4:4 chroma, dynamic lip synchronization and 3D video pass-through.

The MX124 also accommodates gaming-related HDMI functions such as Auto Low Latency Mode, Quick Frame Transport and Variable Refresh Rate. Together, these features enable the processor to manage modern consoles, high-frame-rate sources and current-generation displays without requiring a separate video switching device.

Streaming and extensive audio connectivity

Integrated music streaming is available through Apple AirPlay, Bluetooth, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect. The MX124 is also Roon Ready and supports high-resolution streaming at up to 32-bit/192kHz.

For conventional sources, the processor provides four digital audio inputs, one balanced analog stereo input and eight unbalanced analog stereo inputs. Component and composite video connections are included for legacy equipment, while two analog stereo outputs can supply additional listening zones. Bluetooth headphone support adds an option for private listening.

This combination enables the MX124 to operate as more than a cinema processor. It can also manage a substantial two-channel source collection and distribute audio to two additional zones within an integrated entertainment system.

Installation and control features

McIntosh has equipped the MX124 with web-based configuration, pre-configuration and file-upload capabilities. Backup and restore functions can help installers preserve system settings or reproduce an established configuration.

Control options include RS232 and IP interfaces. The processor is also certified for Control4 Simple Device Discovery Protocol integration, allowing compatible automation systems to identify and incorporate it more efficiently.

Regional pricing and availability details have not been disclosed. The MX124 is positioned for professionally configured home cinemas and multi-zone installations that require extensive source management, current video standards and flexible loudspeaker deployment.

With 13.4-channel processing, four independent subwoofer outputs and a broad selection of calibration, streaming and control options, the McIntosh MX124 is designed to anchor sophisticated home cinema systems while also handling music and multi-zone duties.
