One of Pro-Ject’s premier anniversary turntables was a tribute to the Vienna Philharmonic, celebrating its 175th anniversary.
In its design, Pro-Ject incorporated wood and metal components from original musical instruments. Only 175 units were produced, each receiving enthusiastic acclaim.
Now, Pro-Ject reintroduces this exquisite turntable, this time without instrument components, yet maintaining a similar aesthetic and technological excellence.
The new model, named The Classic Reference, is built on The Classic EVO platform but features an enhanced sub-chassis suspension that is both heavier and stiffer, effectively minimizing resonances.
The objective of the manufacturer is to effectively decouple the turntable and its arm from the vibrations generated by the motor and the wooden base. The platter is constructed from dense aluminum and features advanced TPE rubber on its underside to enhance damping capabilities. The movement of the platform is facilitated by a sub-platform, also crafted from aluminum.
The newly introduced Classic Reference turntable features an entirely redesigned arm from Pro-Ject’s latest collection, ensuring continuity in design. This arm is characterized by a screw counterweight at the rear for precise adjustments and adopts an ‘S’ shape, measuring 9 inches in length.
To enhance playability, the turntable is equipped with a robust screw clamp. The subplate is also made of aluminum.
The Classic Reference is accompanied by a handcrafted headstock commemorating the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s anniversary. The sound profile of this head is developed in collaboration with members of the Vienna Philharmonic and is produced in Europe by Ortofon, adhering to the specifications set by the Austrian manufacturer. This is known as the VPO Anniversary head.
The Classic Reference features not only RCA terminals but also a balanced XLR connection, catering to users of moving coil heads with compatible phono stages. It is offered in a Piano/Silver finish for 4,990 euros, and with the VPO head for $5,990.
