Audioengine has refreshed one of its well-known wireless speakers, the Audioengine HD 3, which was first launched in 2016. It remains a compelling choice for those in search of a desktop powered speaker. This model provides an excellent mix of compact dimensions, both wired and wireless options, and a budget-friendly design for individuals seeking quality sound in their work environment without requiring extensive technical knowledge.
Now, in 2025, they have introduced a significant update. The Audioengine HD3 Next Gen maintains the same appearance as its predecessor, but internally, it has undergone several important enhancements that effectively bring the model into the year 2025. New features include a USB-C input, an upgraded DAC, and a modernized Bluetooth adapter.
The most significant enhancement of the Audioengine HD 3 is the incorporation of a 24-bit DAC chip. The first-generation model featured a 16-bit version, which was commendable in quality, but this upgrade provides a clearer, more intricate sound, particularly when the speakers are connected directly to your computer using USB-C.
Additionally, Audioengine has introduced Bluetooth version 5.3 compatibility in the new speakers, supporting aptX HD, AAC, and SBC codecs. They have even included an external antenna to enhance range and connection reliability.
In other respects, the manufacturer has adhered to the successful formula that has served it well. The external appearance is nearly identical to the original: maintaining the same dimensions, the same wooden trim case, and the same removable grilles. Internally, everything is driven by a Class A/B amplifier that outputs 15 watts RMS per channel or 30 watts peak power per channel. While the power may appear modest, it is sufficient to easily fill an office or bedroom with sound.
The drivers continue to be unchanged. Each enclosure contains a 2.75-inch aramid fiber midrange/woofer and a 0.75-inch silk dome tweeter, delivering the characteristic powerful and warm sound. The frequency response ranges from 65 Hz to 22 kHz. If you enjoy deep bass, you can easily connect an external active subwoofer.
The headphone amplifier, which utilizes the OPA2134 operational amplifier and can deliver 380 mW of power with a load of 32 Ohms, is also retained, providing ample power for most headphone models.
A key benefit of the Audioengine HD3 Next Gen speakers is their straightforward installation and operation – simply connect them using USB-C, RCA, or 3.5 mm AUX. Additionally, there is an adjustable RCA line output available for future subwoofer connections or to link to another device.
The Audioengine HD3 speakers represent a balanced option within the company’s range. They utilize the same amplifiers and drivers as the A2+, yet provide additional features and a superior build quality. Although they are smaller and somewhat less powerful than the HD4s, this can be advantageous for compact desks or areas where space is limited.
