Drivers
The Reference 5 is a 3-way, 4-driver floorstanding loudspeaker, sharing its layout with the higher Reference models. At the top sits Canton’s BC tweeter, a 25 mm aluminum ceramic oxide dome known for its extended bandwidth and low distortion. Below it is a 174 mm BCT midrange driver with a black ceramic tungsten cone and wave-optimized surround, designed for speed, neutrality, and tonal precision.
Bass duties are handled by two additional 174 mm BCT woofers—slightly smaller than those used in the Reference 2 and 3, but built on the same technological foundation. Canton’s insistence on producing all drivers in-house pays dividends here. On the rear panel, the Reference 5 features high-quality WBT Nextgen bi-wiring terminals, along with Canton’s RC (Room Compensation) controls. These allow the tweeter and midrange output to be adjusted in 1.5 dB steps, making it easier to tailor the speaker’s balance to different rooms, placements, and personal preferences—an unusually practical feature in this class.
Crossover points are set at 170 Hz and 3 kHz, and the quoted frequency response spans an impressive 21 Hz to 40 kHz. With a sensitivity of 88 dB and nominal impedance options of 4 or 8 ohms, the Reference 5 remains compatible with a wide range of quality hi-fi amplifiers, rather than demanding extreme electronics.
