Pro-Ject Audio Systems has launched two new headphone amplifiers called the Head Box S3 B and Head Box DS3 B. Both units are fully analog and feature a fully balanced circuit and several headphone jacks on the front. The Head Box DS3 B is the more expensive of the two and has a signal circuit constructed with discrete components.

With the introduction of the Head Box S3 B and DS3 B, Austrian manufacturer Pro-Ject Audio Systems continues its so-called “Box Design” tradition. In short, since the beginning of this century, the designers have focused on space-saving hi-fi components with high sound quality. The new headphone amplifiers mark the beginning of a modernized generation of devices, consistently designed for balanced signal processing and powerful amplifier circuits.
Audiophiles, especially those with high-quality but somewhat insensitive headphones, are expected to benefit from the new models. While the Head Box S3 B, according to the manufacturer, already drives 98% of all current models without any problems, the DS3 B delivers significantly more power, ideal for rare or particularly demanding headphone types.
Fully symmetrical signal path
A key feature of both models is their fully symmetrical signal path. This distinguishes it from many devices on the market that use only balanced connections but lack true symmetrical amplification. The Head Box DS3 B goes a step further and completely dispenses with integrated circuits, employing a discrete, classically designed amplifier circuit.
Both models are produced in the EU. This underscores Pro-Ject’s commitment to quality and consciously positions itself against cheaper alternatives from the Far East. The goal is to offer excellent value without compromising sound quality.
