Harman/Kardon BDS 880 BQ: Innovative, High-performance multimedia system

The BDS 580 Blu-ray receiver is Harman/Kardon’s next step towards innovative, high-performance multimedia systems. The Harman Kardon BDS 580 is the world’s first Blu-ray receiver equipped with Dolby technology. It maintains a constant volume level no matter what entertainment you’re watching, automatically boosting quiet dialogue like moderately loud commercials.

Every detail of the glossy appearance of this receiver evokes aesthetic pleasure. The slightly concave upper metal cover organically combines with the plastic plate surrounding the sides and façade. The left side of the front panel is occupied by a slotted drive tray with a touch button for ejecting a disc, which reads almost all currently relevant formats, including Blu-ray 3D (BD-Live is supported). The centrally located display has large characters.

On the right is the volume knob, combined with the power/standby switch. Its backlight also serves as a power-on indicator. At the bottom (under the tray) there is an input for the calibration microphone of the EzSet/EQ system, combined with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, and a USB port compatible with Apple devices. Harman’s EzSet/EQ™ III automatic calibration process precisely adjusts the BDS 580’s volume levels, tuning and equalization to optimize sound automatically for your specific speaker system and room conditions. The controls are located on a flat programmable remote control with two backlit joystick “wheels” for settings. Control is available via an application installed on iOS or Android devices.

Five class D amplifiers allow you to develop a power of 65 W per channel (6 ohms). The model supports all major codecs, including HD audio, and can scale standard definition video up to 1080p. A convenient menu and intuitive interface make it easy to manage and configure the model. The acoustics auto-calibration system makes it easy to “make friends” of the speakers with the room.

For wireless audio streaming from mobile devices, the AirPlay function is provided, as well as a built-in Bluetooth module. The DLNA protocol is supported, according to which the Harman/Kardon BDS 580 can play audio/video/photos stored on PCs or NAS servers on the local network. When you connect to the Internet, web content becomes available. YouTube and Picasa services are supported.

Inputs (rear side of the case): 3 HDMI (2.0, with 3D support), component, 2 linear (RCA), coaxial, 2 optical, LAN interface. Outputs: one HDMI (with ARC), subwoofer output. There are 5 pairs of colored screw terminals for connecting acoustics. There is an input for an IR receiver, a trigger output (for remotely turning on an active subwoofer) and a jack for an FM antenna.

The Harman/Kardon BDS 580 receiver can work with virtually any set of speakers that match it in impedance. The device is a universal entertainment center and provides excellent sound and picture quality.

Harman Kardon HKTS 35  is a set of speakers for creating a surround sound system, complemented by a wireless subwoofer with a built-in 200 W amplifier.

Four identical two-way satellites are designed for sounding front stereo and rear channels. They are equipped with two 75mm main speakers and a 19mm tweeter. The speaker for the central channel also has two such woofers and a tweeter located between them, thanks to which its horizontal placement is realized. Thanks to the use of identical drivers and crossover filters, the speakers are precisely matched to each other and the surrounding sound space they create is characterized by good uniformity. The speakers are made in closed housings and are equipped with special brackets for wall placement.

The included active subwoofer is compact in size, but can handle sound in fairly large rooms. The subwoofer is equipped with a 200 mm woofer located on the bottom panel of the housing and directed towards the floor. The woofer has a light and rigid diffuser mounted on an elastic suspension, which ensures its piston movement with a large amplitude. The Harman Kardon HKTS 220 SUB subwoofer enclosure is closed, which makes the bass fast and simplifies the task of optimal placement in the room.

The subwoofer is equipped with a linear stereo input, as well as a special input for connecting to the LFE output of an AV receiver or processor. When choosing the second connection option, the device’s own input filter is not used. In order for the subwoofer to be turned on simultaneously with other AV equipment, it has a control trigger input.

The subwoofer also has a standard set of controls, which includes volume and frequency controls for adjusting the input filter, as well as an absolute signal phase switch. A special feature of this model is that it has the ability to wirelessly connect to a signal source. For this purpose, the subwoofer is equipped with a transmitter unit with linear inputs for connection to a receiver or amplifier and has a corresponding built-in receiver. The technology used for wireless audio transmission not only provides good sound quality, but also does not affect existing Wi-Fi or Bluetooth communication channels. The ability to wirelessly connect a subwoofer will be very useful in cases where it is located at a considerable distance from the main system, and laying a long connecting cable is undesirable or simply impossible.

The Harman Kardon HKTS 35 speaker set allows you to create a good-sounding surround sound system in a minimal amount of time. Satellite speakers do not require high power input for full sound quality and fit well with inexpensive receivers of popular brands. The ability to wirelessly connect a subwoofer simplifies the choice of a suitable location for it, which will no longer be limited by the need to lay another cable. At the same time, if the sub is installed in close proximity to the signal source, it can be connected using a cable. To simplify installation, the kit includes all the necessary wires that are conveniently color-coded.
