TEAC PD-505T: Reference Level CD Transport

The TEAC PD-505T features a proprietary TEAC drive, a development that the company takes great pride in. This drive has been utilized in professional settings due to its exceptional durability and reliability. Drawing inspiration from the CD drive design of the CD-5020A, engineers have crafted a new configuration specifically tailored for the PD-505T. The entire mechanism of the TEAC PD-505T CD drive is mounted on a sub-chassis in a semi-floating arrangement, rather than being rigidly affixed to the device’s body. This carefully engineered design effectively mitigates feedback that could adversely affect data retrieval from CDs, as it prevents vibrations produced by the spindle motor and drive from being transmitted to the chassis, thereby reducing interference. Additionally, to ensure that the dampers used in securing the drive components do not compromise sound quality, areas employing more rigid mounting techniques have been thoughtfully designed, taking into account general vibration modes through a combination of both rigid and flexible connections. This approach facilitates more precise data reading from CDs and enhances the purity of the audio signal.

In the quest for enhanced reproduction quality, the company has engineered a new drive control circuit specifically for the CD mechanism. This innovation allows for the spindle motor to be regulated with minimal feedback, facilitating a more natural rotation mode that results in a sound that is even less distorted and more open. Furthermore, a bridge (BTL) circuit is implemented, which effectively eliminates switching noise originating from the spindle and encompasses the drive that operates the sensor lens. This design choice mitigates any subtle influences on the signal reading process, thereby enhancing its clarity. The TEAC PD-505T employs toroidal core transformers for its power supplies. Additionally, it features dedicated power supplies for the OLED display, the CD drive, the microcomputer circuit, and the audio circuits, each equipped with their own secondary windings and rectifiers. To further elevate sound quality, independent power circuits are allocated for the CD drive, microcomputer, and audio circuits.

The digital connectivity of devices can significantly influence the synchronization accuracy, thereby impacting the overall performance of the system. The TEAC PD-505T utilizes a high-quality low-phase-noise crystal oscillator to produce its internal clock pulses. By employing a precise clock pulse to read signals from a CD, the device can accurately reproduce the original audio signal in digital format. Furthermore, an external clock signal input operating at 10 MHz facilitates synchronization with a more precise external clock generator. This not only enhances audio quality during playback through the TEAC PD-505T but also allows for the entire audio system to be synchronized from a single generator, thereby improving performance in conjunction with the DAC. The TEAC PD-505T’s all-metal construction, featuring panels that are resistant to external noise, effectively mitigates the impact of electromagnetic interference from computers and other devices. This design ensures a clean internal environment with minimal interference, even under challenging conditions for audio equipment. Additionally, the device is encased in 8mm thick aluminum panels on both sides, providing the necessary durability and precise dimensions. Its compact size, comparable to that of an A4 page when viewed from above, allows for convenient placement on a desk, nightstand, or other limited spaces.

The innovative three-point, stress-free foot design offers enhanced stability, as it remains unaffected by minor surface irregularities. Unlike earlier models, these feet are only partially secured to the chassis. This design approach is rooted in the idea that permitting the feet to vibrate independently will yield a more authentic sound reverberation. Constructed from machined steel, these feet are not rigidly affixed but are instead designed to connect freely to the base of the unit. While they provide a similar placement experience to the pointed, spiked feet of previous iterations, this configuration results in a more natural and enriched sound reverberation.
