McIntosh MR87: Classical Tuner from a legendary company

McIntosh MR87
McIntosh MR87

The McIntosh MR87 Tuner model continues the proud traditions of the American company, whose tuners have represented the “gold standard” in the Hi-Fi industry for decades.

McIntosh MR-87 is designed for Europe, Asia and Oceania. A good audio tuner determines its ability to perfectly receive radio signals. McIntosh MR-87 contains the functions of classic tuners, although at the same time it processes digital signals, which gives unusually clean and clear sound. Digital signal processing also eliminates the usual noise effects from multi-reflected FM interference found in all analog FM tuners.

The McIntosh MR-87 tuner has a stainless steel chassis. The glass front panel of the case has fiber optic backlighting in combination with LED diodes. In its center there is a linear scale with an electronic pointer for adjusting the AM/FM bands, made in the signature design of the 60-70s. It has three built-in LED indicators that confirm the choice of band and reception of stereo programs. Below is a 2-line fluorescent display showing the received radio station band, track and artist name, as well as other symbols and parameters related to the tuner settings.

To the left of the scale there is a knob for selecting station presets, which is also involved in menu navigation. On the right is a knob for manually searching for stations (can be used for other settings). On the left side of the facade there are 4 buttons that turn on the mono mode, provide access to the menu, allow you to select display operating modes, display the noise level, store presets in memory and perform other functions. On the right side of the panel there is a power/standby key, auto-search buttons for stations and a band selector (AM/FM). The kit includes a programmable remote control. It is more convenient to make settings using it.

A special circuit allows the tuner to receive the weakest FM signals with extremely low noise levels, and the strongest ones with a minimum of distortion. McIntosh MR87 allows you to store up to 20 station presets (AM or FM), which are retained even after turning off the power. The signal is processed and adjusted using on-board DSP, which suppresses noise and distortion and provides excellent sound quality. The power supply is based on an R-core transformer, which has a minimal noise level.

Outputs: optical and coaxial, analog RCA and XLR. There are Power Control connectors for controlling the turn-on of the tuner and for auto-turning on McIntosh components connected to it. The DATA IN input allows you to control this model via a preamplifier remote control or a McIntosh AV processor connected through this connector. There is an IR connector, a USB port for flashing, an RS-232C interface, an FM antenna socket and an RJ45 connector for the external RAA2 antenna module, which improves the quality of reception in the AM band. The McIntosh MR87 tuner delivers open, musical sound with minimal noise.
