Campfire Audio Relay: Portable DAC & Headphone Amplifier

Campfire Relay: DA converter and headphone amplifier with 3.5 and 4.4 mm jacks

Campfire Audio has launched a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and headphone amplifier that fits in a jacket pocket or handbag. The new device, called Relay, features two headphone jacks: one 3.5mm jack and one 4.4mm jack. The latter is, of course, for connecting compatible headphones in a balanced configuration.

The Relay is housed in a precision-milled aluminum enclosure that is both lightweight and robust. At the heart of the DAC is the highly regarded AKM 4493 SEQ DAC chip. According to Campfire, it was chosen from a long list of candidates for its combination of technical excellence and subtle analog warmth, which, according to the designers, makes music sound engaging rather than sterile.

It’s also a flexible little device, designed to work seamlessly with Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android devices via USB-C. The Campfire Relay features both a 3.5mm single-ended and a 4.4mm balanced headphone jack, allowing it to be used with a wide range of high-end headphones and IEMs. Under the hood, you’ll find adjustable high and low gain settings, six digital filter modes, support for PCM and DSD files up to 32-bit/768kHz, plus a 60-step volume control and onboard playback buttons.

Campfire also includes a short USB-C to USB-C cable, a microfiber cleaning cloth, and a black, padded Ripstop carrying case, further enhancing its portability, if its size wouldn't suggest so.

We haven't yet received pricing and delivery information, but—just as an indication—based on the dollar price, we suspect the Campfire Relay will be priced somewhere around €250.
