Ortofon has unveiled two new models in the SPU cartridge series: the SPU GTX S and the SPU GTX E. The SPU GTX S is a moving coil cartridge featuring an integrated step-up transformer, a housing reinforced with glass fiber, and a spherical diamond stylus. In contrast, the SPU GTX E, which is also a moving coil cartridge, shares a similar design and construction with the GTX S but is fitted with an elliptical diamond stylus.

The Ortofon SPU GTX S features a spherical needle, which is round in shape, and produces a rich and full-bodied sound. Spherical styli are the most prevalent type of needle utilized.

The rounded tip of the needle engages with the center of the record groove, making conical needles predominantly favored in record players and stereo systems within the budget to mid-range price categories.

SPU GTX E: increased conversion fidelity

The Ortofon SPU GTX E features an elliptical stylus, which is reported to enhance conversion fidelity. Its superior quality is attributed to the elliptical design, allowing for improved tracking of the groove flanks.

SPU GTX cartridges are meticulously crafted by skilled Ortofon artisans in Denmark. The unibody casings are formed from a unique, glass fiber reinforced co-polymer, which has not been previously utilized in SPU cartridges. This innovative material guarantees a housing that is dimensionally stable, rigid, and exhibits low resonance for the generator. Additionally, the lower cover is constructed from the same advanced material, providing a cohesive design that encases the motor.

Built-in step-up transformer

Incorporating a step-up transformer allows the cartridge to be directly linked to any standard phono stage or amplifier, functioning similarly to a moving magnet cartridge. During the creation of the GTX series, Ortofon chose to collaborate with Lundahl Transformers, a company recognized for its proficiency in audio transformer technology, to develop these new step-up transformers.

Modern classic for vinyl enthusiasts

The Ortofon SPU GTX cartridges seamlessly blend the musicality and vibrant tonal qualities that have defined Ortofon’s SPU series for many years with cutting-edge advancements in audio technology.

Ortofon SPU GTX S & SPU GTX E: Prices and Availability

The two new Ortofon cartridges are set to be released through authorized retailers on December 2, 2024. The SPU GTX S will retail for $1,099, while the SPU GTX E will be priced at $1,199.
