ELAC Debut ConneX Adsum: A standout in aesthetics among speakers

ELAC Debut ConneX Adsum stands out as one of the most visually appealing speakers, offering versatility in installation. The stand-mounted speakers create a striking effect, giving the impression that they are suspended in mid-air, where classic design meets modern technology. The tubes feature rubberized pads at the contact points with both the speaker and the support, allowing for secure placement on dressers, TV stands, or any other furniture. They are suitable for any setting.

The grills are constructed from metal and secured with magnets, featuring a fine mesh design that allows visibility of the dark edges of the emitters—an innovative approach. Each grill prominently displays the logos of both companies. Aside from this, they maintain the traditional ConneX design, which includes emitters on the front panel and slotted phase inverters at the rear. However, due to Adsum’s contributions, these grills are visually striking, inviting not only auditory appreciation but also a desire for visual admiration.

The design of the speakers resembles that of typical compact bookshelf models when viewed objectively. One speaker is designated as active, while the other is passive. By default, the active speaker is positioned on the right, although a switch is available to alternate channels. All connections are made exclusively to the right speaker, which features a traditional layout with all ports located on the rear panel. Additionally, the power and volume controls are also situated there, which may not be ideal for users intending to utilize the system as computer speakers. Both speakers are equipped with a slotted phase inverter located at the top of the back panel. This S-shaped design was selected to enhance the performance of X-Bass technology and offers the advantage of not imposing significant limitations on how far the speakers can be placed from the wall. Based on experience, a mere 5 cm distance is sufficient for optimal bass performance.

The ELAC Debut ConneX Adsum aims to reflect contemporary aesthetics in digital devices. Simultaneously, ELAC engineers focused on maintaining the acoustic advantages while accommodating various design modifications. Importantly, the designers’ creative visions did not compromise functionality: these active bookshelf speakers are equipped with an HDMI ARC input, USB-B, Bluetooth with aptX support, an optical input, and an analog RCA. Notably, the same connector can be switched to serve as an input for the integrated MM phono preamplifier, facilitating easy connection to a vinyl player.

The built-in DAC is capable of processing audio files with specifications up to 24 bit / 96 kHz. Moreover, a subwoofer can be connected, and the system can be controlled without a remote via a universal regulator. This functionality is housed within one of the speakers, which acts as the primary unit in the stereo pair. It also features dual amplifiers with a combined output of 100 watts, ensuring ample volume capacity. Each speaker is equipped with two 115 mm woofers with polypropylene cones and a pair of 20 mm soft dome tweeters. The components are linked through standard terminals using acoustic cables. Additionally, the L/R toggle switch indicates the positioning of the passive speaker. The speaker enclosures are noteworthy for their compact yet sturdy design, featuring a sophisticated S-shaped slotted phase inverter that, according to the manufacturer, contributes to a rich and expansive sound. Another highlight is ELAC’s proprietary XBass Enhancer technology, which enhances bass performance.

The kit features metal grills attached via magnets, a component typically found in audio systems that are twice the price. Given that the ELAC Debut ConneX Adsum delivers double the sound output, one might expect the metal grill to be a simple mesh, notable only for its removable design that avoids the traditional pin holes. However, this is not the case. The grill is constructed from robust metal, thoroughly coated, and the magnets are equipped with thick rubber pads to prevent any rattling.

Additionally, it is worth highlighting the inclusion of exclusive speaker stands in the package. This practical and affordable accessory is often absent from audio system bundles. Placing speakers directly on a table or TV stand can lead to early reflections and cause the low-frequency driver to press against the surface, resulting in sound distortion. Without dedicated stands, the only way to mitigate this issue is by increasing the speaker’s size, which complicates internal space management. Overall, shelf speakers should not merely be treated as standard shelf models, especially those with a rear phase inverter, which should not be placed on a shelf at all. In the case of the ELAC Debut ConneX Adsum, careful consideration has been given to ensure that the design complements the included stands.
