JBL Synthesis has pulled the covers off the new SDR-40, a high-end immersive AV receiver aimed squarely at serious home-cinema installations. Unveiled at Integrated Systems Europe 2026 in Barcelona, the new model combines large-scale channel processing, integrated Class-G amplification, and advanced room correction into a single, installation-friendly chassis.
Rather than chasing the mass-market living-room receiver crowd, the SDR-40 is designed for dedicated theater rooms and high-performance systems where flexibility, power, and precision matter just as much as features.

Real amplifier muscle
At its core, the SDR-40 is a 16-channel processor with nine built-in Class-G amplifier stages. This amplifier topology is chosen for its ability to deliver high power when needed, while maintaining efficiency during normal listening levels.
That means the receiver can directly power substantial speaker systems straight out of the box, yet still leaves room for expansion via pre-outs if the installation grows into something even larger.
JBL Synthesis positions the SDR-40 as a practical alternative to separates—offering the scale and control of multi-box systems, but in a more compact and streamlined format.

The SDR-40 is built around modern object-based audio. It supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X Pro, IMAX Enhanced, and AURO-3D, covering virtually every major format used in today’s cinema releases and premium streaming content.
Flexible matrix channel assignment makes it easy to tailor the system to the room. From classic 7.1.4 layouts to more ambitious configurations with extra height or surround channels, the SDR-40 is designed to adapt to the installation rather than the other way around.
Dirac Live
No matter how advanced the electronics are, the room always has the final say. To address this, the SDR-40 includes Dirac Live room correction.
Dirac adjusts both the frequency response and the time domain behavior of the system, helping to tighten bass, improve clarity, and deliver a more coherent soundstage. It’s a key feature for dedicated cinema rooms—and often a lifesaver in living-room installations where acoustic treatment is limited.
Modern HDMI platform with 8K and gaming features
On the video side, the SDR-40 is built around HDMI 2.1a. It supports 8K at 60 Hz, 4K at 120 Hz, and includes gaming-friendly features such as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), and eARC.
That makes it equally at home in a movie-focused theater or a high-end gaming setup.
Streaming and control built in
Beyond cinema duties, the SDR-40 also serves as a networked audio hub. It supports Apple AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, Qobuz Connect, and TIDAL Connect, and carries Roon Ready certification.
Control is handled through the JBL Synthesis app, which provides access to streaming, presets, internet radio, and system settings. A high-resolution front display offers clear feedback and playback information.
Price
The JBL Synthesis SDR-40 was introduced at ISE 2026 with a suggested retail price of €7,099. It will be available through authorized dealers and professional custom-installation partners.
With 16 channels of processing, nine channels of Class-G amplification, Dirac Live correction, and full immersive-audio support, the SDR-40 positions itself as a compact but formidable control center for modern home theaters built without compromise.
