Emotiva Launches Balanced DRS Series Streamer, DAC, Preamp and Power Amp

The Emotiva Differential Reference Design stack brings a fully balanced signal path from streamer to power amplifier.

Emotiva introduces its Differential Reference Design series, a fully balanced streamer, DAC, preamp and power amplifier system starting at $699 per component.

Emotiva has unveiled a new line of two-channel electronics under the name Differential Reference Design—a complete, fully balanced separates system built around the company’s long-standing philosophy: serious engineering, practical features, and pricing that stays within reach of ordinary music lovers.

The new series consists of four components: the DRS-1 network streamer, DRD-1 DAC, DRP-1 preamplifier, and DRA-1 stereo power amplifier. Each unit is designed around a differential signal topology, with balanced circuitry from input to output. According to Emotiva, this approach reduces common-mode noise, improves channel separation, and helps preserve low-level detail as the signal passes through the system.

Balanced XLR connections between the components are not just an optional extra—they’re a central part of the concept. The idea is to maintain signal integrity across the entire chain, even in compact multi-component setups where interference and noise can otherwise creep in.

A complete separates system for the price of many single components

Emotiva has built its reputation since 2003 by delivering honest, high-performance audio gear without the luxury-brand price tags. The new Differential Reference Design series continues that tradition.

The full four-component system carries a combined price of $2,599, positioning it as a realistic entry point into a true balanced separates setup. For those who prefer to build a system gradually, each unit is also available individually:

  • DRS-1 network streamer: $799

  • DRD-1 DAC: $699

  • DRP-1 preamplifier: $699

  • DRA-1 power amplifier: $799

In typical Emotiva fashion, the numbers tell the story: this is a complete, feature-rich hi-fi separates system priced closer to what many brands charge for a single component.

DRS-1 network streamer: Volumio-powered and fully featured

At the front of the system sits the DRS-1 network streamer, built around the Volumio Premium streaming platform. It provides direct access to services such as Qobuz and TIDAL, along with playback from local network servers, USB drives, and NAS storage.

Wireless streaming is supported via built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, while a wired Ethernet connection is available for maximum stability and performance.

Inside, the DRS-1 uses an ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chip, a well-known 32-bit converter designed for low distortion and high dynamic range. The analog stage employs MC33078 and OPA1656 op-amps, selected to maintain low noise while preserving resolution and dynamic nuance.

The streamer offers both balanced XLR and single-ended RCA analog outputs, with adjustable output levels controlled through the Volumio interface. For systems using an external DAC, fixed-level digital outputs are available via coaxial and optical S/PDIF.

A particularly practical touch is the HDMI video output, which allows the user interface to be displayed on a TV or projector. Playback status, track information, and album art can be viewed at a distance—ideal for listening rooms where you’d rather not reach for a phone every time you change a track.

Connectivity is rounded out by two USB ports for local storage or peripherals, along with trigger input and output for synchronized power control across the system.

Measured performance and output levels

On paper, the DRS-1’s balanced XLR outputs deliver up to 4.2 VRMS, while the RCA outputs provide 2.1 VRMS. The frequency response is specified at 20 Hz to 20 kHz (±0.2 dB) for standard and higher sampling rates, and the signal-to-noise ratio is rated at over 116 dB—figures that place it comfortably within serious hi-fi territory.

A balanced system without the usual price shock

With the Differential Reference Design series, Emotiva is clearly aiming at listeners who want the technical advantages of balanced separates without venturing into the five-figure territory that often defines that category.

It’s a straightforward, engineering-first concept: a complete, fully balanced signal chain from streamer to speakers, sensible features, and pricing that makes the step into true separates far more approachable than usual. For many systems—especially those built around neutral, high-resolution loudspeakers—this could be one of the more interesting value-focused launches in the mid-fi segment this year.
