Yamaha has unveiled the Yamaha YHT-4970U home theater system , which builds on the recently announced Yamaha RX300A AV receiver and is designed for home theater enthusiasts who want a complete 5.1-channel home theater system without having to source individual components.
The Yamaha YHT-4970U system includes a Yamaha RX300A AV receiver, five compact satellite speakers, an active subwoofer with an 8-inch driver, speaker cable, and setup accessories. The company markets the system as a simple entry point into a home theater system using individual components, but in reality, the system also competes with premium soundbars and wireless TV audio systems.

Judging by the published specifications, the Yamaha YHT-4970U's acoustics haven't been significantly redesigned. The speaker system is likely largely inherited from the earlier Yamaha YHT-4950U: compact satellites with full-range drivers, a matching center channel, and an active subwoofer with an 8-inch driver.
The major update concerns the RX300A receiver, which Yamaha positions as a modern replacement for the long-standing entry-level RX-V385 receiver. This model features a 5.2-channel configuration, a rated power of 70 watts per channel at 8 ohms, an operating range of 20 Hz – 20 kHz, a distortion factor of 0.09%, and dual-channel operation. The new model features HDMI 2.1 ports, support for 8K/60 Hz and 4K/120 Hz video, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, VRR, ALLM, Bluetooth 5.3 Multipoint, and Dolby Atmos decoding. Thus, the device supports virtually all modern audio and video standards used in home theater systems.

Although the Yamaha YHT-4970U home theater system uses a traditional 5.1-channel setup without separate height speakers, the receiver supports Dolby Atmos playback via virtual surround processing. Furthermore, the Yamaha RX300A leaves room for further system expansion, including connecting a second subwoofer thanks to its two subwoofer outputs.

Compared to a soundbar, this system can provide a more realistic rear channel effect thanks to the physically separated surround speakers, as well as greater flexibility in placement and future upgrades. Yamaha clearly prioritizes simplicity and affordability over expert-level performance: the compact speakers are equipped with 2.75-inch full-range drivers with a sensitivity of approximately 83–84 dB, and the subwoofer utilizes Yamaha's Advanced YST II technology.
