Nakamichi has unveiled a new organic component for its Dragon home theater system: an active subwoofer featuring a 12-inch driver and a powerful 750-watt amplifier. The name Nakamichi Dragon instantly evokes memories of the iconic cassette deck with three heads and auto-reverse functionality, which was manufactured from 1982 to 1993. While it may not be universally regarded as the greatest deck ever, it certainly ranks among the top three. By choosing to associate this legendary name with contemporary products, such as a home theater system, the developers have set exceptionally high expectations for themselves.
The latest subwoofer has been developed to meet the demands of Dragon theater system owners seeking enhanced bass performance. A survey carried out by Nakamichi revealed that 67 percent of participants favored a subwoofer with a driver measuring 12 inches or more, and 41 percent expressed a desire for three or more subwoofers in their home theater setup.
The Nakamichi Dragon active subwoofer, weighing 36 kg, is equipped with a 12-inch driver made of carbon fiber-reinforced aluminum and a matching 12-inch carbon fiber passive radiator. The manufacturer claims that this setup can produce bass frequencies as low as 19 Hz, supported by a robust 750-watt amplifier. This performance is significantly deeper and more impactful compared to full subwoofers that utilize 8-inch opposed drivers.
Should your passion for bass escalate into an obsession, you have the option to integrate up to four of these 12-inch powerhouses into the Dragon system. Nakamichi asserts that this home theater will leave even the most dedicated bass enthusiasts in awe.
Rayman Cheng , CEO of Nakamichi USA, says, “Our 12-inch subwoofer doesn’t just pump out bass – it pumps out thunderous rumbles with thunderous infrasonic energy, bringing a new dimension to your favorite content . ”
The latest subwoofer has been integrated into Nakamichi’s Dragon modular surround sound system. When fully configured, this system boasts 21 channels, 15 Class D amplifiers, six upward-firing speakers, and a duo of omnipolar speakers dedicated to the effects channels. It stands out as one of the pioneering wireless systems that offers support for DTS:X Pro, catering to enthusiasts of advanced surround sound technology.
The new 12-inch Nakamichi Dragon subwoofer is priced at a suggested retail of $1,499.99 in the U.S. The complete model, featuring two opposing 8-inch drivers, is available for $1,199.99. This product is set to launch in the U.S. on August 28, 2024.
