Canton’s history will impress everyone. Today Canton is a leading manufacturer of speaker systems in the European market. Canton acoustic systems are high-quality acoustics that have become world leaders in a short period of time.
Canton was born in Germany almost forty years ago, in 1972, thanks to the efforts of its four founders – Hubert Milbers, Otfried Sandig, Wolfgang Seykritt and Günther Seitz. Its story began in the small town of Weilrod, located thirty-five kilometers southeast of Frankfurt-Maine. The first production was located in a small building that previously belonged to a rural school; it was there that the first model of acoustic systems was created – very small, by today’s standards, bookshelf speakers, which, however, quickly received many good reviews and became the first success of the company. This is how the company Canton was born, which means “to sing” in Latin. No one then thought about what would happen next. And then the development team created the world’s only anechoic chamber. In 1989, the speakers in it were tested, thanks to which the world received even more advanced models of this brilliant team. Today, Canton speaker systems number over 300 models, and the number of series reaches 10 units. The first series produced by Canton was Karat. The elegant forms immediately attracted the interest of the general public. This series was loved not only by the male half of humanity, but also by women. Thoughtfulness in everything and subtle taste are those features in the work that Canton cannot do without. Even Juan Carlos fell in love with this brand and installed an audio system of this brand in his car. The range of Canton products offered is quite large. There are floor, wall and built-in options. The sound quality is always top notch, no matter what you choose. Even IPOD fans can listen to their favorite tunes on Canton speakers. And the design is thought out to the smallest detail and will immediately attract the eye.
Now the company has its own design bureau and two production sites. According to European market research, Canton is the leader in speaker sales in Germany, with a 30% market share, and also has large shares in most European countries. Over its almost forty-year history, the company has accumulated many interesting developments, which were subsequently implemented in a wide range of models. Among past successes, we can note the first subwoofers designed to operate in trifonic mode, and the company’s first floor-standing speakers – Canton Ergo, which are still valued by music lovers and audiophiles, which is why they are rarely found on the secondary market; do not forget the achievements in the field of car acoustics. Throughout its history, the company has strived to introduce the most modern developments along with traditional technologies – already in the 90s, developers experimented with digital amplification, and then began developing acoustics using wireless technologies. The company’s main focus is speaker systems, but they are not Canton’s only products. If we look at the current lineup, we can see many series of classic acoustics, from quite affordable ones to the expensive and very serious Reference series. In addition, they produce home theater kits, active subwoofers, home and outdoor built-in acoustics, car audio, as well as a line of life-style components, which includes wireless docking stations, computer adapters and active wireless speakers.
In Germany, the production is assembly; the components with which the speakers are filled are delivered from the Czech Republic. Behind the assembly shops lies a service center, its floor-to-ceiling racks filled with various spare parts – there were even speakers for acoustics that were produced several decades ago. After leaving the assembly shop, we found ourselves in the very first building of the Canton factory – today the company’s engineers and developers are located here. All new models are born here, and technologies are honed here that give these models their individuality. Here the designs of aluminum diffusers for speakers were developed, which became probably the most recognizable signature feature of acoustics: aluminum-magnesium and aluminum-ceramic dome tweeters and speaker baskets made of polymer material, traditional for the manufacturer. When working on the designs of speakers and acoustic systems, mathematical modeling methods and complex software, including our own, are widely used. Using mathematical models as an example, Frank explained and showed how speaker suspensions work, which, it should be noted, are distinguished by an unusual shape and design – this is one of Canton’s patented developments. The next two important components of the engineering building are the anechoic chamber for laboratory measurements and the main test system. I would like to dwell on it in more detail – hearing Canton Reference acoustics in everyday life is not so easy – in our country it is rare.
Judging by the composition of the system, we can assume that the acoustics are critical to amplification – each speaker is driven by two powerful Audionet transistor monoblocks from the top line. But the result is also audible – not every acoustic system can create such a fast sound with excellent attack, micro and macro dynamics. We also managed to listen to active wireless bookshelf speakers from the your_World line, playing files from the docking station. What can I say – it has its own style, and the sound is larger than one might expect. Even in the company’s budget components, the concern for sound quality and thoughtfulness of details are noticeable.
