JDS Labs Atom Phono: Affordable Phono Preamp with Tone Controls

JDS Labs has launched the Atom Phono, a cost-effective solid-state phono preamplifier that boasts high gain and tone control features. The manufacturer claims that this new device delivers sound levels that are four times greater than those of most built-in phono preamplifiers found in integrated amplifiers and receivers. Its versatile switch system enables users to set the device as an equalizer, a phono preamplifier, or both, or to bypass it entirely. With a subsonic filter, selectable gain options of 30 or 40 dB, and remarkably low total harmonic distortion (THD) and noise levels, the Atom Phono provides essential RIAA preamplifier capabilities at a competitive price, according to JDS Labs.

The RIAA phono stage of the Atom Phono employs parallel passive components to reduce discrepancies from the reference curve. The output from the subsonic filter is directed to a gain stage, enabling an optional signal amplification from 30 dB to 40 dB. A set of four electromagnetic relays facilitates the activation or deactivation of the phono and equalizer stages, allowing users to select one, the other, both, or neither.
