Volumio Primo V3 Streaming DAC Brings a New Platform and ESS Sabre Conversion

Volumio has redesigned its Primo streaming DAC for a third generation, adding updated processing hardware, an ESS Sabre DAC stage, flexible analog output levels and broader system control options.

Volumio has introduced the Primo V3, a third-generation streaming DAC redesigned around the company’s latest engineering platform and updated with new hardware aimed at greater flexibility in hi-fi systems.

A third-generation streaming DAC with revised hardware

The Primo V3 continues Volumio’s concept of combining network streaming, digital-to-analog conversion and system control in a single compact component. For this generation, the unit has been rebuilt with a newer quad-core CPU, a revised linear power supply stage, an improved analog output stage and an ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M DAC chip.

The update also adds several user-adjustable audio options. The analog output level can be set in eight steps, allowing the Primo V3 to be matched more easily with different amplifiers, active speakers or preamplifier setups. Analog output is available on both RCA and XLR connections, giving the streamer a route into unbalanced and balanced systems.

Volumio has also included a switchable non-oversampling mode and eight selectable DAC filters. The filters offer a choice of linear-phase and minimum-phase characteristics, providing more configuration options for users who want to tailor the DAC’s digital filtering behavior within supported settings.

Streaming platform and supported services

The Primo V3 runs the latest version of the Volumio operating system. It supports playback from local storage, network-attached storage and online music services, placing the unit in the role of both a streamer and a DAC rather than a conventional standalone converter.

Service support includes Tidal, Qobuz, HighResAudio, TuneIn and Spotify. The platform also supports Tidal Connect and Qobuz Connect, allowing compatible apps to hand off playback directly to the streamer. Roon support is also listed, broadening the Primo V3’s usefulness in systems built around a Roon library and control environment.

The included HDMI video output mirrors the Volumio interface and supports resolutions up to 4K. That means the user interface can be shown on an external monitor or television, while compatible touchscreens can also be used for direct control. This gives the Primo V3 an alternative to phone, tablet or computer-based operation where a fixed display is preferred.

Digital architecture and audio formats

Inside, the streamer is powered by a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, supported by 2 GB of DDR4 memory and 16 GB of internal eMMC storage. The onboard DAC supports PCM playback up to 384 kHz/32-bit.

When used as a digital transport with an external USB DAC, the Primo V3’s USB digital output supports PCM up to 1536 kHz/32-bit and DSD1024. This allows the unit to serve either as a complete streaming DAC or as a network transport feeding a separate converter.

Additional hardware details include a master clock specified for ultra-low phase noise and an ultra-low-noise linear power supply. Together with the updated analog output section and the ESS Sabre DAC chip, these changes define the main hardware revision over the earlier Primo platform.

Connectivity and system integration

Network connectivity is provided through Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi. Bluetooth 5.0 is also included, giving the Primo V3 a wireless input option beyond network streaming services and local library playback.

Physical connections include two USB-A ports, a microSD card slot, the HDMI video output, analog RCA and XLR outputs, and a 12V trigger output. The trigger connection is useful for integrating the streamer into a system where other components can power on or off in coordination with the source.

The chassis measures 27 x 15 x 5 cm and weighs 2.5 kg. Those dimensions place the Primo V3 in a compact hi-fi component category, small enough for desktop or rack-adjacent setups while still offering balanced analog outputs, wired networking and external display support.

With its updated processing platform, ESS Sabre ES9039Q2M conversion, adjustable analog output level and extensive streaming support, the Volumio Primo V3 is positioned as a flexible network source for systems that need both a streamer and a DAC in one unit. Pricing in USD has not been specified.
